One of the most rewarding parts of academic medicine is seeing former international visiting scholars thrive and lead.

Last weekend in Neuss, Germany it was a true pleasure to see orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Max Petri (Germany, 2014–2015) hosting an international orthopaedic trauma congress. He brought together former international visiting scholars, who worked with Dr. Millett, Drs. Simon Euler (Austria, 2015–2016) and Uli Spiegl (Germany, 2013–2014) as invited faculty.

Not all meniscus tears need surgery but in cases where there is chronic pain, locking, or mechanical symptoms surgery may be needed. Dr. Millett performs arthroscopic repairs using sutures or absorbable implants. Options range from trephination (to stimulate healing), to repair, to partial or complete resection. Dr Millett wants to give a heartfelt congratulations to Mike Nocek, a CU medical student working with him this year as a research assistant. Mike has created a truly moving tribute to Dr. Rob Gaffney—a CU Med alum, brilliant psychiatrist, and legendary skier—who passed far too young after a courageous battle with cancer.

Through his film, Mike brought to life some of Rob’s most iconic runs from the late 1990s, capturing not just the skill, but the spirit and joy Rob carried on the mountain. It’s no surprise that this tribute has just won the top award at a film festival.

Mike, your creativity, dedication, and thoughtfulness honor Rob’s memory in a way that is both inspiring and deeply touching. Thank you for reminding us of the impact one life can have.
