I've always been an advocate of including a substantial amount of forage pellets in our horses' diets. (By substantial, I mean a few pounds daily). Pellets may be you go-to in an emergency. Easy to store, keep in the trailer and will provide a consistent element in the diet if your horses end up stuck at a shelter where the hay is totally different. They can be used as the total diet when necessary and will store well as long as they are kept dry.

Expect higher hay and feed costs and possibly higher nitrates levels in drought stressed hay. Consider making pelleted forage such as Timothy pellets a larger part of your horse's diet for both consistency and as emergency backup if unable to source quality hay.

A severe drought is creating a water crisis not seen in more than a century for farmers and federally protected fish along the Oregon-California border
