We did it! 🥾✨

Last week, Dr. Raymond Kim led our annual Life After Total Joint Replacement Hike Day starting at the Berry Picker Trailhead on Vail Mountain, bringing together hip & knee replacement patients, families, and our care team to celebrate getting back to the activities we love. Pace groups kept everyone comfortable, and the energy on the trail was incredible.

Thank you to every patient who joined us and to the team who made it seamless.

Navigating NIL: Athletes as Patients and Brands

In the June Healio Exclusive, top sports medicine physicians discussed the impact of name, image, and likeness (NIL) policies on physicians and athletes. Peter J. Millett, MD, MSc, of The Steadman Clinic highlighted an often-unseen struggle: athletes may tie their self-worth to performance when competing for NIL contracts and opportunities—leading to grief or imposter syndrome after injury. He emphasized the importance of overcommunicating, staying grounded in expertise, and blocking out external pressures. The physician’s duty? Clear athletes when they are ready, protect them when they are not, and stay focused on long-term health, trust, and shared decision-making.

🦴 Aspen Lecture Recap: Diagnosing and Managing Hip Pain

We were excited to welcome Dr. Ali Noorzad for our latest Aspen Lecture Series presentation: “Hips Don’t Lie.” His lecture began with an overview of hip anatomy and common pathologies then shifted focus to one of the most critical aspects of care: determining where hip pain is coming from—and how to treat it effectively.

Dr. Noorzad emphasized the importance of a thorough diagnostic approach that combines physical examination and imaging to avoid missing the source of hip pain as it can be related to a variety of conditions, including muscle/tendon overuse, bursal inflammation, joint issues, or sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction.

When conditions like femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) or hip dysplasia are identified early, joint-preserving procedures may delay or even eliminate the need for hip replacement. Although hip replacement remains a highly successful option for advanced disease, younger patients have an increased risk of needing revision surgery in the future. Dr. Noorzad highlighted the importance of exhausting conservative measures—such as physical therapy, injections, anti-inflammatories, and activity modification—before considering surgery.

Lifestyle factors like smoking, va**ng, and poor nutrition can significantly impact healing and recovery. Dr. Noorzad emphasized the important of honesty between patient and surgeon, noting that successful outcomes are more likely with shared decision-making, realistic expectations, and long-term commitment to the treatment plan.

Key Takeaways:
🔹 Consider imaging for persistent, localized hip or groin pain
🔹 Prioritize conservative treatments before surgery
🔹 Address comorbidities first to reduce surgical risk
🔹 Educate patients on lifestyle changes to reduce joint overload
🔹 Encourage honest conversations around treatment goals and recovery

Thank you, Dr. Noorzad, for providing valuable education to the Aspen community!

🏆Dr. Matthew Provencher Honored with 2025 Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughn Award🏆

We are thrilled to share that Dr. Matthew T. Provencher has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughn Award by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)—one of the highest honors in orthopaedic research!

đź“· Dr. Provencher with Kristin Power, Director of Kappa Delta, and Dr. Francis Lee, Chair of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Research Awards Committee.

The award was presented during the AAOS Annual Meeting in San Diego—a location with deep significance, as it was there that this groundbreaking research first began over two decades ago during Dr. Provencher’s active military service.

As lead investigator, Dr. Provencher led a team of 10 physicians in producing the landmark study: “Advancement in Care Through Applied Translational and Clinical Research in Anterior Shoulder Instability: Military Contribution Over 25 Years.”

Originally launched in San Diego and later completed with the support of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI), this 25-year research effort has revolutionized care for arthroscopic shoulder stabilization. The study’s influence on treatment guidelines, surgical indications, and clinical outcomes has redefined what is now considered the gold-standard approach to shoulder instability—benefiting both military and civilian populations around the world.

Please join us in congratulating Matthew Provencher, MD - Orthopedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Specialist - and his research team on this extraordinary achievement!

💬 “The distinguished Kappa Delta Award is so well deserved for Dr. Provencher and his fellow military surgeons that endeavored so long to complete this project.” – Marc Philippon, MD Managing Partner of the Steadman Clinic
