Why do you sometimes react so strongly… even when you *know* it doesn’t make sense?
Here is something most people don’t know about the brain:
It is constantly trying to “file” your experiences.
Think of your brain like a file cabinet.
During the day, things happen, stress, conversations, arguments, experiences.
At night, especially during REM sleep, your brain processes and files them.
That is why you can have a fight with your mom, go to sleep,
and the next day it feels less intense.
Nothing changed externally.
But your brain now knows what to do with it.
It got filed.
But not all experiences get that chance.
When something is overwhelming, like a car accident, trauma, or intense emotional moment,
the brain gets flooded.
It cannot process it in the usual way.
There is no “file” for it.
So it stays unfiled, stuck, raw, and emotionally charged.
And here is where it gets tricky:
Later in life, when something in the present feels similar,
a tone, a situation, a feeling,
your brain links it back to that old, unprocessed memory.
So your reaction is not just about now.
It is about then and now combined.
This is why people say,
“I know I’m overreacting, but I can’t stop it”
Because the brain is pulling from an unprocessed file.
EMDR helps the brain finish the job.
We go back to the original memory,
and help the brain process and “file” it properly.
Once that happens:
The memory is still there,
but it is no longer activating your system.
And something even more important happens,
all the newer situations connected to that memory start to calm down too.
Because the root is no longer active.
So it is not just about the past.
It is about why the present feels the way it does,
and how we can finally change it.
If you feel like your reactions don’t match the situation,
or your past is still showing up in your present,
EMDR therapy can help.
