When your body feels stuck in fight or flight, it can feel like your mind just won’t slow down.

Your heart races, your thoughts spiral, your chest feels tight, and no amount of “just calm down” seems to work.

That is because this is not just in your thoughts, it is happening in your nervous system.

I created a simple guide with 4 quick ways to help your body move out of survival mode:
: deep breathing
: self support / gentle hug
: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 grounding
: ice water reset for your hands

Sometimes the fastest way to feel better is to help your body feel safe first.

If you have been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck in stress, you do not have to navigate it alone.

Ready to break the cycle and find calm?

Why do you sometimes react so strongly… even when you *know* it doesn’t make sense?

Here is something most people don’t know about the brain:

It is constantly trying to “file” your experiences.

Think of your brain like a file cabinet.
During the day, things happen, stress, conversations, arguments, experiences.
At night, especially during REM sleep, your brain processes and files them.

That is why you can have a fight with your mom, go to sleep,
and the next day it feels less intense.

Nothing changed externally.
But your brain now knows what to do with it.

It got filed.

But not all experiences get that chance.

When something is overwhelming, like a car accident, trauma, or intense emotional moment,
the brain gets flooded.

It cannot process it in the usual way.
There is no “file” for it.

So it stays unfiled, stuck, raw, and emotionally charged.

And here is where it gets tricky:

Later in life, when something in the present feels similar,
a tone, a situation, a feeling,
your brain links it back to that old, unprocessed memory.

So your reaction is not just about now.
It is about then and now combined.

This is why people say,
“I know I’m overreacting, but I can’t stop it”

Because the brain is pulling from an unprocessed file.

EMDR helps the brain finish the job.

We go back to the original memory,
and help the brain process and “file” it properly.

Once that happens:

The memory is still there,
but it is no longer activating your system.

And something even more important happens,
all the newer situations connected to that memory start to calm down too.

Because the root is no longer active.

So it is not just about the past.
It is about why the present feels the way it does,
and how we can finally change it.

If you feel like your reactions don’t match the situation,
or your past is still showing up in your present,
EMDR therapy can help.

Our Brain, Your Chemistry:
SSRIs don’t add something new, they help your brain use more of its own natural feel good chemical, serotonin, to support mood and balance.

Ever notice how many people try an antidepressant once, feel worse, and then decide medication “doesn’t work for them”? The reality is often much more complicated.

One of the biggest challenges I see in mental health treatment is not that medication cannot help. The challenge is finding the right medication and the right dose for the specific person.

Psychiatric medications are not one-size-fits-all. Genetics, metabolism, and brain chemistry can all change how a medication works in the body. For some people, a medication that works well for others may cause strong side effects, feel too intense, or simply not work.

What often happens is this:

• The dose is too high for the person’s metabolism
• The medication is not the best match for their biology
• Side effects appear early
• The person understandably gives up on treatment

But precision matters. The correct medication and dose can make a major difference in how someone feels and functions.

Tools like pharmacogenetic testing can sometimes help guide decisions by showing how your body may metabolize certain medications. It does not replace clinical care, but it can help reduce some of the trial-and-error process.

If medication is part of your treatment plan, the goal should always be thoughtful prescribing, careful monitoring, and individualized care.

If you are navigating medication decisions and want to better understand your options, education matters.

I just published a new blog post:
Psychedelic Therapy in Mental Health: Learning From the Past

As someone who works with trauma and is currently training in psychedelic assisted therapy, I see the promise these treatments hold. At the same time, I also feel the importance of moving carefully so the field grows responsibly.

In this post I share some thoughts about the history of psychedelic research, the current development of ketamine, M**A, and psilocybin therapy, and why protecting this work matters.

If you are a mental health or medical professional interested in where this field is going, I invite you to read.

Psychedelic therapy is showing promising results for depression, PTSD, and trauma. But as ketamine, M**A, and psilocybin treatments grow quickly, the mental health field must learn from the past to protect the future of these powerful therapies.

There are wounds that don’t come from fear.

They come from guilt. From shame. From the feeling that something inside you broke when your values collided with reality.

I just published a new blog post about moral injury — what it is, how it happens outside of the military, why it is often misunderstood, and how healing is possible.

If you’ve ever carried regret, self blame, or the quiet question of “Did I fail?” this may resonate.

You can read it below (click link)

I would love to hear your thoughts.

There are wounds that come from fear. And then there are wounds that come from something much deeper.

For many veterans, the battle doesn’t end once they come home. Memories of combat, loss, and trauma can linger long after deployment, showing up in nightmares, flashbacks, and a constant feeling of being on high alert. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a heavy burden that too many veterans carry silently.

That’s where EMDR therapy has shown incredible promise.

As a therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how effective EMDR can be in helping people process painful memories and reclaim their lives. And as someone who...... con't

What You May Notice During EMDR Reprocessing
Many people think EMDR is about “thinking hard” or trying to remember every detail. It is actually the opposite. Your brain does the work on its own because the memories stayed unfiled and stuck in the system.

When something in the present carries a similar feeling or theme, the brain links it, and the body reacts as if the old moment is happening again. This is why you may notice emotions, sensations, images, or memories pop up during reprocessing. Your system is trying to make sense of old material that never got sorted.

EMDR helps the brain finally file these memories in the right place so the body can stop reacting to them as danger. This is why things often feel lighter after reprocessing. They are no longer stuck, and your nervous system does not have to stay on alert.

If you are curious about EMDR or want to understand what may happen in a session, save this post and reach out with questions.

HOW BILATERAL STIMULATION WORKS?
EMDR looks gentle from the outside, but inside the brain a lot is happening. Your visual shows it perfectly, so here is the short version your audience needs.
When we use BLS: eye movements, tapping, or tones, we activate both sides of the brain at the same time. This helps the brain shift a stuck memory into a more adaptive place. It is very similar to how your brain works during REM sleep.
As the sets continue, people usually notice:
• Thoughts changing; it feels different now
• Emotions moving; rising or lowering
• Body sensations shifting; breath deepens, heaviness releases
• Memories becoming less sharp; the story feels farther away and less charged
The goal is simple: reduce the emotional intensity while your brain keeps the learning and the insight.
