Set sail with Blythedale at ATIA!

We’re proud to share that our very own JeanMarie Florkowski, OTR, ATP, and Andres Guerrero, MSE, presented at the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) conference last week. Through real-life case studies on alternate access and switch-activated events, our Assistive Technology team highlighted creative, collaborative solutions that promote inclusion, participation, and joyful experiences for children and families across our hospital, school, and long-term care settings. Alternate access opens new ways to engage, connect, and celebrate every child’s abilities.

Bryce’s nurse, Amanda D’Ambrosio, BSN, RN, was inspired by a current TikTok trend for a balloon glove friend. Bryce’s balloon glove friend looked just like him, complete with a Passy-Muir speaking valve and a pulse oximetry adhesive taped to its finger.

Bryce’s Child Life Specialist, Devorah Furman, MS, CCLS, shared how special the moment was when he got the doll: “Bryce was especially excited to see himself represented, which made it a really meaningful moment for him.”

In September of 2023, Aubrey was diagnosed with ependymoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the central nervous system; the spinal cord in Aubrey's case. In March 2024, after months of rigorous rehabilitation at Blythedale, following surgery and radiation therapy, she regained movement in her body by being able to wiggle her toes.

Today, Aubrey walked out of Blythedale for the final time, cheered on by her classmates and supported by her physical and occupational therapists, Bob Radomski, PT, and Tara Sullivan, OT.

Aubrey, we're SO incredibly proud of you and cannot wait to see all of the places you will go. 🦋
