Words matter! Oftentimes when people come to volunteer for the first time, it might seem silly at first when advising them to be careful with using words like “addict” or “abuse”. However, words frame the way we think about these topics like substance use and treatment, and often propagate a cycle and culture of shame that prevents people from opening about substance use disorder. Being intentional with our language, so that we are only describing the behavior without the unwanted stigma is a massive priority for us at DSS so we can reframe that story. We are open every Thursday from 4-6 at Norman C. King Community Center for all your harm reduction needs. Always remember that you are loved, and you are important 🧡.
