In this evenings notice from Porter Cty Health Dpt: there is a patient in Porter Hospital with coronavirus. The hospital has a plan to try and protect pregnant women and newborns. But what if? This new virus shines a light on one of the biggest concerns of hospital birth : colonization of the neonate’s gut and exposure to foreign bacteria. Hospitals are incredibly necessary when birth goes out of normal
Parameters and a mom or baby need medical intervention. For the vast majority of healthy women and babies, home birth with a qualified trained midwife is as safe, if not safer, with much less intervention. How many mothers and babies do you know who had antibiotics during labor because of a GBS swab? Would effects does starting life on antibiotics have on the colonization of the gut for a newborn: Increased rates of asthma, poor immune systems, respiratory problems for life ? What about for mom: yeast infections, thrush, edema after birth? Do we consider those risks when looking at what we do in the US? Maybe it is time to reconsider our obstetric practices and policies to improve long term outcomes for women and babies.

A review published in the BMJ shows that universal antenatal screening for group B streptococcus may cause more harm than good.
