We knew we were getting tall when we passed up Grandma West. Born on the East Coast of Italy in the small town of Ortona. Her Father Vincenzzo Iubatti and his wife Tereasa decided to make a better life for themselves in America. Arriving in the land of opportunity the 15th of June 1907 the little family went through Immigration at Ellis Island. As they passed through Ellis Island Maria Iubatti became Mary Iubatti.

It was not that unusual to Americanize a Name when entering the country. However, if I had not seen the ships manifest and then the Ellis Island record I would have never known that my Grandmother had had a different name.
