I call this the “island of sad”.🥲 Big beautiful flowers that have been nourished and nurtured for 5 months are suddenly infected with the dreaded Botrytis or “bud rot.” Growers know this pain and are probably cringing at the site of this 10 inches of sadness.

It is preventable and the number one way to prevent it is proper cultivar selection.

If you live in the wet dishrag humidity of August & September in the northeast and you are trying to grow a cultivar who evolved in the arid desert mountains you can pretty much expect to see this at some point.

Want to prevent the island of sad? Begin by asking the breeder what their bioregion is and if the cultivar is “mold resistant.” Proper cultivar selection is crucial to good quality flowers.

A big decision growers need to make is seed or clone to start? They both have benefits and drawbacks. Benefits like:

Seeds have lots of VIGOR, tons of DIVERSITY, are usually cheaper and you have a primary, long term relationship with them (commitment issues aside 😂)

Clones are a known quantity, you know they are female, how they grow and what medicine they bring. You don’t know what relationship issues they bring with them such as bugs or infections (no, not STD, but fungal) and they can be pretty pricey.
