Celebrating Black Leaders in Behavioral Health
Learn More: https://conta.cc/4k64nan
As we celebrate Black History Month, the Center honors and recognizes the historical accomplishments made by Black pioneers in behavioral health.

From groundbreaking early research sparking debate on desegregation, to new techniques and therapies, we recognize Black counselors, researchers, therapists, doctors, social workers and advocates who elevated our understanding of mental health and made invaluable contributions to the field.

It is important to honor those who shaped the trajectory of mental health and all that was done to improve the well-being of society. We thank them deeply for all they have contributed. These pioneers worked to help others and leave lasting legacies for future generations. Their dedication allows us the opportunity to continue their critical work.

Happy Lunar New Year!
Learn More: https://conta.cc/4k6GkIx
Across the globe, around 2 billion people celebrate the Lunar New Year. This holiday is typically a time for family gatherings, festive meals, and joyous celebrations for family and health, honoring ancestors and deities, and includes gifting red envelopes containing money, and watching lion and dragon dances within close-knit communities.

As we celebrate Lunar New Year, it's important to take a moment to reflect on our mental health. For some, holidays are a time of stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Whether you are spending the holiday alone, dealing with family conflicts, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of the season, it's important to prioritize your mental well-being.

Remind yourself that despite what your social media feed may be telling you, you aren’t the only one struggling through Lunar New Year. Be kind to yourself. This is your chance to create your own holiday traditions that are meaningful and enjoyable to you.

February is Relationship Wellness Month
Learn More: https://conta.cc/45Cq3VP
Developing healthy relationships is an important life skill.

Open and honest communication, mutual respect, and support are all components of a healthy relationship. Everyone deserves to be treated well and as equal partners in a relationship of their choosing. They have the right to set boundaries, negotiate compromises and determine what is non-negotiable within their personal relationships.

Healthy relationships are critical. The Center has multiple programs, including Bullying/School Violence Advocacy, that offer treatment and support for victims of unhealthy and abusive relationships.

February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
Learn More: https://conta.cc/4tbAERK
Teen dating violence, also called, “dating violence,” is an adverse childhood experience that affects millions of young people in the United States. Dating violence can take place in person, online, or through technology. It is a type of intimate partner violence (IPV) that can include the following types of behavior:
· Physical violence
· Sexual violence
· Psychological aggression
· Stalking

Teen dating violence has a profound impact on lifelong health, opportunity, and well-being. Unhealthy relationships can start early and last a lifetime.

One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, s*xual, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner. Violent relationships in adolescence can have serious short- and long-term ramifications by putting the victims at higher risk for depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, risky s*xual behavior, further domestic violence, and su***de.

The good news is violence is preventable and we can all help young people grow up violence-free. The Center's programs are here to help break the cycle of abuse.

February is Black History Month
Learn More: https://conta.cc/3Z230Qu
As we honor Black History Month, it's important to understand the impact of culture on mental health.

Facing racism, discrimination and inequity can significantly affect a person’s mental health. Being treated or perceived as “less than” because of the color of your skin can be stressful and even traumatizing. Additionally, members of the Black community face structural challenges accessing the care and treatment they need.

It is essential for people to receive quality care by culturally competent health care professionals. People must feel that their identity is understood and respected by their provider in order to receive the best possible support and care. Provider bias, both conscious and unconscious, and a lack of cultural competency can result in misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. The Center emphasizes the importance of equity in care and access to services.

The Center remains committed to equality for all and to taking specific and meaningful steps to increase diversity, equity and inclusion.

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month
Learn More: https://conta.cc/4r02hLu
There are different types of human trafficking - s*x trafficking, forced labor, and domestic servitude. Victims are usually targeted because of vulnerabilities that are eventually exploited by the perpetrators. Victims of child abuse or domestic violence, or those experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental illness, are especially vulnerable to trafficking.

The Center has programs to help. With the Center's services, safety is of the utmost importance. Victims may be fearful and reluctant to receive services due to threats or manipulation from their perpetrators. They need an abundance of education, resources, and community supports. That includes information on a variety of topics including power and control, understanding the cycle of violence, developing escape/safety plans, and connections with shelters and other community resources.
