Our Past

Our past began with Harry B. Cowan who operated a store in Willshire and provided undertaking services on both sides of the Ohio-Indiana state line starting in 1907. In 1920, Harry and his family moved to Ohio City where they opened a general store and provided funeral services to that community. During these early years visitation hours or wakes were usually conducted in private residences and funeral services in the neighborhood church. Prior to World War II, Harry purchased property in Van Wert and established his funeral home, moving to the present location on South Washington Street in 1940. Over the years, Harry’s sons, Marvin and Donald joined the family business and continued its operation after the elder Cowan’s death in 1950. During their long lives, they extended friendship, professionalism, and care to the many families we have been privileged to serve.
