Trauma-Informed Care

At Lavender Spectrum Health
Trauma-informed care is not a specialty service.
It is how we practice — with every patient, every day.

We assume trauma is common.
We recognize how it impacts the nervous system and physical health.
We prioritize safety, autonomy, and respect.
We actively work to prevent re-traumatization.

Why It Matters
Trauma can affect:
• Chronic pain and fatigue
• Sleep and mental health
• Cardiovascular and autoimmune conditions
• Trust in healthcare
• Ability to advocate for oneself
What may look like “noncompliance” is often a protective nervous system response.
Trauma-informed care improves outcomes for everyone.

Our Core Commitments
Safety
You deserve to feel physically and emotionally safe.
Transparency
We explain what we’re doing and why.
Autonomy
You have choices — including the choice to decline.
Collaboration
Healthcare is done with you, not to you.
Empowerment
We focus on strengths and resilience.
Cultural Humility
We recognize systemic inequities and bias.
Informed Consent
We ask permission before exams, touch, or sensitive topics.

What This Looks Like

In the Exam Room
• We set the agenda together
• We explain procedures step-by-step
• We ask permission before touching
• You can pause or stop at any time
• We offer options when medically appropriate
• We use your correct name and pronouns

In Conversation
• Curiosity instead of judgment
• Neutral, non-assumptive language
• Clear reasons for sensitive questions
• Validation without minimizing

At the Front Desk
• Confidential communication
• Transparent billing
• Compassionate scheduling policies
• Respectful language

Preventing Re-Traumatization
We avoid:
• Surprise touch
• Forced procedures
• Dismissal of symptoms
• Misgendering or deadnaming
• Talking over patients
• Judgmental documentation
Even small moments matter.

Caring for Metabolic Health from a HAES Perspective
A Health at Every Size (HAES)–Informed Approach
You may have been diagnosed with a metabolic condition such as PCOS, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease (MASLD), insulin resistance, or prediabetes. These conditions are common—and they are not a personal failure.

This handout explains how we can support your metabolic health without focusing on weight loss, restriction, or shame.

What “Health at Every Size” Means
Health at Every Size (HAES) is an approach to care that recognizes:

Health is not the same as weight.
People can improve blood sugar, cholesterol, liver health, and symptoms without weight loss.
You are the expert on your body.
Your preferences, experiences, culture, and needs matter.
No assumptions.
We don’t assume how you eat or move based on labs, diagnoses, or body size.
Harm reduction matters.
Dieting and restriction can worsen physical and mental health, especially for people with a history of disordered eating.
Neutral, respectful language.
We focus on labs, symptoms, energy, and quality of life—not “good” or “bad” behaviors.
You Choose What We Focus On
There are different ways to manage metabolic conditions. At your visits, we’ll ask what you want to work on:

Medications only
Lifestyle changes only
A combination of both
Neither, for now
All of these choices are valid

A Note About Food & Eating History
Before talking about nutrition or movement, we routinely ask about past or current eating disorders or disordered eating.

This is because:

Diet advice can be harmful for some people
Your safety matters more than any plan
If you’ve ever struggled with:

anorexia
bulimia
binge eating
ARFID
chronic dieting or restriction
We will:

move carefully
avoid calorie counting, portion rules, or weight-focused advice
offer support or referrals to HAES-aligned dietitians if helpful

Have you struggled with recurrent bacterial vaginosis, UTIs, or yeast infections you couldn’t get rid of or kept coming back? I’m a nurse practitioner with expertise in s*xual and reproductive health and I have some clinical experience to share with you.

One of the most common sources of recurrent infections is s*x toys. Yes, even if you only use them with yourself. If you have a medial grade silicone toy without electronics it should be washed in the top rack of the dishwasher or be boiled after a use. If your toy has electronic components there is no way to clean it to the level needed to prevent infections, even if you only use it on yourself. I recommend using a condom over electronic toys. The stores sell you cleaner solutions but this is not sufficient.

Additionally, if you have bacterial vaginosis, having your partner treated is now recommended.

The more you know! Like and follow me to learn more about s*xual and reproductive health.

As a nurse first and foremost, I am enraged and heartbroken at the cold-blooded ex*****on of nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis this morning by ICE. I saw the video this morning on my drive into clinic, and cried in my car without knowing anything about him including his profession, the color of his skin, or his immigration status. I dried my tears and took care of patients as we often do as nurses.

ICU nurses and VA nurses are some of the best among us. VA ICU nurses are another level of nurse, providing the most complex care to some of the sickest people in our country often without the resources needed to provide that care. I saw the video of Alex reading the final salute to a dead veteran in his care and I saw myself as a nurse. I know what it is to care for a dying person as a nurse and do my best to walk them home with kindness and dignity through the process. I saw that same desire in Alex in the video of him delivering the final salute.

I have been crying throughout the day for Alex, his patients, the others murdered by ICE (Renee Good, Keith Porter, and the immigrants whose names we do not know and will never know).

At the clinic we will do anything and everything we can to support the health and wellbeing of the people in the community affected by ICE or people protesting ICE. We have free whistles to give away to draw attention to people being kidnapped by ICE.

MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome) is a condition where mast cells (immune cells involved in allergic & inflammatory responses) release “alarm chemicals” like histamine too easily or too intensely — even when there isn’t a true allergy or obvious danger.

This can cause symptoms across many body systems, and it often feels unpredictable, overwhelming, and hard to explain.

Common MCAS symptoms can include:

• flushing, itching, hives
• swelling or “puffy” reactions
• nausea, reflux, abdominal pain, diarrhea
• nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing
• dizziness, lightheadedness, rapid heart rate
• headaches, brain fog, fatigue
• sensitivity to heat, cold, stress, or fragrances

MCAS triggers vary — and can stack:

Your body may tolerate one trigger on a good day…
but multiple triggers can “add up” and cause a flare.

Common triggers include:
• certain foods (especially leftovers/aged/fermented foods)
• heat, hot showers, exercise when unstable
• infections, stress, poor sleep
• alcohol
• fragrances/chemicals
• hormonal shifts (PMS/perimenopause)

What helps most (for many people):

✅ reducing “total trigger load”
✅ a consistent routine (sleep, hydration, meals)
✅ gentle nervous system regulation
✅ individualized medication support when appropriate
✅ a clear flare plan (instead of panic + guessing)

MCAS is real.
And you deserve care that is safe, trauma-informed, and not dismissive

At Lavender Spectrum Health, we care for neurodivergence.
You may wonder “What is neurodivergence?” Neurodivergence includes seven main conditions or symptom clusters, and these include autism, ADHD, OCD, tourette’s syndrome, executive function conditions, intellectual disability, auditory processing disorders, and co-ocuring or overlap conditions.
These are the conditions that are most commonly accepted in the umbrella of neurodivergence or neurodiversity, but there are controversies. Many people include psychiatric conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and more. Neurodiversity is an umbrella term where everyone is welcome. This is in many ways similar to the LGBTQ+ umbrella where everyone is welcome.
This is a way to identify yourself as having a way of thinking and processing information and relating to others that is different from other people.

The holidays can bring joy and stress — especially if you’re neurodivergent or have a history of an eating disorder. Sensory overload, disrupted routines, food pressure, and body comments can make this season hard. You’re not alone, and you’re not doing anything wrong.

Gentle reminders:
✨ Eat what feels safest, not what’s expected
✨ Bring or eat “safe” foods — that’s accommodation, not avoidance
✨ One meal (or season) does not define recovery
✨ You don’t owe anyone an explanation
✨ Boundaries are allowed, even if others are uncomfortable

After hard moments: be gentle with yourself, regulate your nervous system, and remember tomorrow is new data — not a punishment.
