GLP-1 medications are often described as “sugar-lowering” or “weight loss” meds… but one of their most important effects is on a hormone called glucagon.
Glucagon is made in the pancreas and tells your liver to release stored sugar into the bloodstream.
In type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance, glucagon can stay inappropriately high… even when blood sugar is already elevated. That means the liver keeps “dumping” sugar when the body doesn’t need it.
GLP-1 meds:
• Lower glucagon when glucose is high
• Reduce the liver’s unnecessary sugar release
•Lead to smoother blood sugar curves, fewer highs and crashes
•Take pressure off the insulin-producing beta cells over time
This isn’t “cheating.”
It’s treating a real, biological problem with real physiology.
If you’re considering a GLP-1, talk with an obesity medicine specialist who understands hormones, metabolism, and you as a whole person—not just the number on the scale.
