Today (March 6, 2026) I was inside a tornado.
I was at work when it happened.
I’m safe, and thankfully no one at my job was injured. I’m incredibly grateful for that. Some others nearby weren’t as fortunate, and my thoughts are with them tonight.
Experiencing something like that reminds you very quickly that nature is powerful, unpredictable, and deserves respect.
Storms are beautiful to watch. Many of us grew up standing on porches, watching the sky roll in. But today reminded me that when nature speaks loudly, we should listen.
Here are a few things I want to share with anyone willing to hear them.
1. When they say seek shelter… listen.
Warnings exist for a reason. When severe weather is expected, take it seriously and get somewhere safe.
2. Nature often gives signs before things turn dangerous.
The birds go silent.
The air grows still.
The wind changes direction.
The temperature drops.
The sky takes on that strange color that makes the world feel different.
Learning to notice those changes can give you precious moments to react.
3. Know where your safe places are.
If you spend time somewhere often — work, stores, events — take a moment to learn where the safest shelter is. Basements and interior rooms can make all the difference.
4. Stay calm and trust your instincts.
When things get chaotic, your body floods with adrenaline. That’s not weakness — it’s your survival system turning on. Slow your breathing, focus, and move with intention.
I’m fortunate to have some military experience, and in moments like this something switches on inside you. Everything slows down. The mind becomes clear. You act.
But that clarity comes from preparation, awareness, and respect for what you're facing.
Today was a reminder that we are not separate from nature.
We live inside it.
Storms can be awe-inspiring… but they also deserve humility.
Pay attention to the signs.
Respect the power of the land.
And take care of each other.
If you’ve ever experienced a tornado or powerful storm, what signs did you notice before it hit? What saved your life?
