FAQ’S About Lice
1. What do lice look like? Full grown lice have 6 legs, they are the size of a sesame seed, they are a brownish color and they do not have wings.
2. Can Lice be dangerous? Lice do not carry disease. They can cause itching and possibly a rash, however some people have lice and do not have itching.
3. How to Identify Nits (eggs)? They are oval in shaped, they are laid on the hair shaft with a glue-like substance close to the scalp. If placed on a white surface you will see a brownish translucent shell.
4. How long does it take for a nit to hatch? It will take 8-12 days for a nit to develop and hatch.
5. How are lice transported? Head to head contact is the most common way lice are transferred. They can also be transferred through caps, helmets, and hair brushes.
6. How long can a louse live off the head? 24-36 hours when it is off the head. The louse needs human blood from the scalp to survive and it feeds up to 3 times a day.
7. How long can a nit live off the head? If a nit falls off the head it will die quickly because it needs the warmth of a human head. Nits are glued to the hair shaft so it’s unlikely that they will fall off the hair.
8. What are “Super Lice”? Lice have built up a resistance to pesticides that are in commercial lice treatment products which causes these product to be non-effective.
9. What do nits look like: They are brown when placed on a white paper towel and are round on one side and pointy on the other with an antenna.

12. Does it mean that my children have dirty hair because they have lice? On the contrary, lice like clean hair. Clean hair is easier for the lice to attach to than oily hair.

14. Should I report that my child has lice to their school and friends? It is the parent’s choice. It is better however to let everyone know so that they can break the cycle of lice and not give it back to your child.
15. Can I get lice from my pets? No, lice and nits can only live on human heads.
16. Is there a school policy on lice and allowing children back to school? The American Pediatric Association recommend not keeping a child from school as most children have already been in school two weeks before the discovery. Some schools still maintain a “no nit” policy. Check with your school nurse.
