Thank you to the team at Secure Beginnings for sharing your wisdom about group facilitation techniques for our staff’s social communication play groups to further develop our own facilitation strategies for being with toddlers and parents.

We ❤️❤️❤️ role-playing (!!!) typical toddler situations like navigating turn taking and “touching bodies” (aka pulling hair, hitting, biting, etc.) which truly brings so many of the tenets of Secure Beginnings’ work with families to life.

Thank you so much for the awesome joint staff in-service with you! We are so grateful for to work in partnership with you and for the collaboration 🙏❤️🙌

Row row row your… (wait 5 seconds for “BOAT!!”)
Gently down the… (wait…..) “STREAM!!”

The toddlers in ELP’s social communication play group love some boating fun!!
We work on getting in and out of the boat, and prepositional concepts like next to, across from, which are necessary to build language comprehension and direction following in preschool.
And through physically active play, that boat starts a-rockin’ and our toddlers are singing!
And this speech boat also stops quite a bit for several ready, set… “goes!” to add to the target word mix 😊

Snack time isn’t just about eating in toddlerhood. Snack time is one of the most natural opportunities for communication. Some of the strategies that ELP therapists use during snack time in our weekly social communication play groups are based on strategies of creating opportunities for communication or
1. Therapists and children are face to face
2. Therapists provide choices (many toddlers have favorite colors with cups and bowls)
3. We give our snacks bit by bit so there’s an opportunity to ask for more.
4. We intentionally give toddlers things they can’t open, so they will ask for our help
5. Lots of spills happen with open cups and we don’t jump to clean it up, so that our toddlers can comment “uh-oh!” being a frequently used word here.

Learning to wait is a lifelong skill that starts in toddlerhood. In ELP’s social communication groups we practice a lot of waiting and narrate how waiting can feel hard at times.
We wait for our friends to put their shoes on to go outside and even sing songs about waiting while we wait 😊
Waiting for turns with bubbles creates so many opportunities for communication, navigating turn taking, and building the capacity to wait (supporting regulation and patience) all at once.

Target words: my turn, bubbles, blow, dip, in/out, spill, oops, more, waiting

Sensory play is a fundamental way of how young children learn and make sense of their expanding world using their tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, visual, oral, auditory, & olfactory senses.
In ELP’s social communication play groups, we don’t think that sensory play should be dismissed for more imposed adult directed learning, and it’s definitely not “for the birds” (although the birds here are very happy that we use bird seed in our sensory bins!!)

Target words: scoop, dump, in, out, truck & spin.

Parachute play for a soon-to-be rainy day. In our weekly social communication play groups ELP staff foster an atmosphere of connection, learning, and the joy of participating in group activities from an early age. Nothing says fun like a parachute where favorite target words include: “stop” and “go,” “up” and “down” and “shake, shake, shake!!!”
