Ventura Family Medicine Residency Program

Ventura Family Medicine Residency Program The Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) is a premier site for unopposed full spectrum Family Medicine training.

Affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine, VCMC is one of the original 15 programs approved in Family Practice and has been educating physicians since 1928. Graduates of the program are equipped with the skills to work anywhere, especially with the medically underserved. Ventura residents establish continuity Family Medicine practices for a diverse patient population in the Academic Family Medicine Center while managing VCMC's inpatient medicine, surgery, OB, ICU, ER, and pediatric services. They take time out once a week for protected didactic time, enjoy each others' company during an annual all-resident retreat, and get to live in Ventura, California.

Integrated fellowships: 🎓📍

Our R2s just selected their integrated fellowships - they are the first class of 4-year residents of the AIRE program at VCMC! 🌠

Our residency has been training Family Residents since 1928. It is one of the original 15 programs in the country.

Participating in the AIRE program is how we continue to lead our specialty in the mission to preserve the breadth and quality of full spectrum Family Medicine physicians empowered to serve in all settings, especially for the marginalized.

Trauma haze ⚠️

Drills, skill labs and reps keep our trauma abilities sharp all year long. You could even call them ~critical~!

Our residents do ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) certification during orientation and then hit the ground running doing primary & secondary surveys, head of bed, procedures, ultrasound FAST exams, and post trauma inpatient care. While we have a surgery/ trauma rotation, we also cover different parts of trauma care on medicine/ ICU/ ER rotations… just like FM docs at rural hospitals do.

📸 a few NARC moments 🤪

Every intern & senior team celebrates the morning after finishing a 7 tough night stretch. They are responsible for all adults & ped admissions, covering the hospital patients, and responding codes/ rapids/traumas. There’s a lot to celebrate though - growth as leaders and physicians, tons of delirious silly fun moments, and realizing just how much you know!

✨ROTM: Dr Mary Harris (R1) ✨

Mary exudes genuine care and radiates mental health bonuses to everyone within a 10 foot radius of her. She is also very thorough in care for her patients; whenever a coresident sees one of her primary patients in clinic or she sees one of theirs, things are so on-track, patients are getting the care they need, and they tell us she is excellent.

Mary always goes above and beyond for her coresidents. She is a true friend and the person you want by your side. We love the joy & care you share with everyone around you, Dr Harris!! We are soooo lucky to be your coresidents!!

‘tis the season of holiday wear, cookies & potlucks in the breakrooms, and extra kindness to make the hospital a more cheerful place for patients and staff over the holidays ✨

Dr Wood (R3) and Dr Banegas (R1) were the dream night admitting team (NARC) taking care of the adults & kiddos admitted to the hospital over the holidays.

🌎🩺 Global Health: Dr Close (R3) Worked at Paradise medical services, a remote urgent care in Nosara, Costa Rica.

Saw tropical infectious disease like dengue, did minor procedures like suturing and IM injections, helped with trauma resuscitation and did ambulance ride-along for a critical patient who needed emergent transfer to the hospital (1 hr away on bumpy jungle roads)

Commute every day was a 10 minute walk through this beautiful jungle trail 😍

ROTM: ✨Dr Charlotte Healy (R3) ✨

Char is the most dedicated doctor many of us have ever met. Her patients come first. Period. Whether it’s ensuring her patient gets their transplant, ensuring her patient gets to say goodbye to their family, or coming in during vacation to meet/admit/care for a patient with no prenatal care struggling with SUD. She never cesases to amaze all those lucky enough to work with her. She has a heart of gold!

We love you, Char!!
