HCFVC is grateful to the Health Careers Exploration Program (HCEP) through the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) for their generous donation. Their support helped provide medical education simulation equipment that enhances hands-on learning for students in the Health Occupations Pipeline Program (HOPE) at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC).

The HOPE Program is made possible through the generous support of grants, donations, and dedicated local professionals who make this six-week program possible each year. HOPE provides a valuable opportunity for aspiring healthcare professionals in Ventura County to explore and prepare for careers in health care.

The Language Access & Interpreter Services Department at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and Santa Paula Hospital is strengthening the quality of care for individuals facing language barriers. In 2024, the Health Care Foundation for Ventura County (HCFVC) was awarded funding from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) to expand language access across Ventura County.

This newly established department is led by Jorge Mejia, Director of Language Access and Interpreter Services, alongside Interpreters Maribel Rojas and Heriberta Gomez. The team provides Spanish and Mixteco interpretation in person, by phone, and via video, ensuring patients receive clear and compassionate communication in their preferred language. To date, they have translated more than 40 patient documents into Spanish.

In July, Jorge and his team launched a 40-hour, in-person interpreter training program. The first cohort has since earned certification, equipping local professionals to deliver culturally competent interpretation across medical, educational, government, and nonprofit settings. A second cohort will begin training this month.

A special thank you to the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) for supporting the growth of Language Access and Interpreter Services in Ventura County, improving communication and care for patients countywide.
