Vascular Dementia, Alzheimers type can be a difficult diagnoses to comprehend. It has also been linked to a genetic disorder called hemochromatosis (a build up of iron).
This one surprises families because the main problem isn’t memory. It’s the body.
Vascular dementia is often caused by strokes or poor blood flow to the brain. So you might see slower thinking, weakness on one side,
more falls, mood changes.
“Good days and bad days”
And decline often happens in STEPS, not slowly.
So they may seem stable… then suddenly worse.
That’s brain damage from tiny strokes.
And the care plan should include:
Physio
Fall prevention
Blood pressure control
Movement
Not just memory games.
If you treat every dementia like Alzheimer’s, you miss half the problem.
Different cause → different care.
Always ask which type.
