Chipeta (1843-1924) is known to have been an advocate, peacemaker, and advisor who held great influence. Her wisdom was sought by both sides of the cultural divide. As the wife of Ouray, Chief of the Uncompahgre Utes, she was a frequent presence beside him at Tribal Council Meetings and meetings with the U.S. government. Together, they advocated for their people and for peace. At the time, this was highly unusual for a woman. Despite the forced removal of her people from their ancestral lands in Colorado to Utah, she remained a pillar of strength and a cultural keeper until her passing.

Legacy in the making. ✨Doris Karren Burton (1932-2015) founded the Uintah County Regional History Center in 1982. At that time, the archive was little more than a closet. Who could have foreseen that it would grow into the highly valuable institution it is today? As a local historian and author, Doris wrote twelve books that have become staples for anyone interested in local history. She served as the Uintah County Library Director from 1976-1982, when she gave up the position to become the head of the Regional History Center. It is her original vision and sacrifice that brought this institution into existence. Thank you, Doris!

Josie Bassett (1874-1964), a friend to the outlaws and a rumored cattle rustler, is a colorful woman of the Uinta Basin. Her life was anything but ordinary. Some unconventional things about her were that she walked down the aisle five times, and legend has it she was suspected of taking a 'till death do us part' vow a little too literally. 🤫🖤 Josie also wore overalls and a short haircut, living life on her own
terms.
