Researchers recreated a 1,000-year-old Anglo-Saxon remedy known as Bald’s Eye Salve using a medieval medical text. The mixture of onion, garlic, wine, and bile salts was brewed according to historical instructions and tested by scientists at the University of Nottingham.
Laboratory results showed the remedy killed up to 90 percent of antibiotic-resistant MRSA bacteria, even in biofilms where modern antibiotics often fail. Researchers believe the effectiveness comes from the interaction between ingredients, producing antimicrobial effects no single component achieves alone.
As antibiotic resistance continues to rise worldwide, the findings suggest ancient medicine may offer clues for modern treatment development. Sometimes, innovation does not come from creating something new, but from rediscovering what humanity once knew.
