"It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique."
-Conan O’Brien, from his 2011 Dartmouth college commencement address
I've been thinking about perfectionism a lot lately. The idea that we have to be an expert at everything we do, that we have to speak and move and exist without a single flaw, and it's really been bumming me out.
The perfectionism invades every part of my day, even choosing a picture for this post--this photo isn't right because of this body part and this body part and this body part... Even the tiny pumpkins in the background made me pause because it's not perfect to post pumpkins in April.
Sigh. Why do we do this?
Every differently-shaped, differently abled, differently captured part of me is what makes up ME. I'm not you, you're made up of different shapes and different abilities. I'm me. This. And it's my failure to become my perceived ideal that makes me uniquely me.
Friends of all abilities, shapes, sizes, and fitness levels, please join me. Let's work together to release our perceived ideals and embrace our glorious uniqueness.
We have classes for everyone at Sweet Lotus and if you've been thinking that yoga isn't for you because you're too stiff or can't clear your head or can't sit comfortably on the floor--give us a try. If you're scared to try a group class because you're not an expert yet, remember, no one's an expert and this isn’t a recital. It's a practice. Come and practice with us.
