Professional, expert care with a personal touch! We believe there is more to vision performance than 20/20 eyesight.

At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, we believe that you are never too young or too old to benefit from Neuro-Visual therapy. We understand how the Eyes, Brain, Body, and Mind are connected, and how to significantly improve how they work together. Which is why we are now dedicated to Neuro-Visual performance training. We have 38 years of experience helping patients improve their vision and overall quality of life. We listen carefully to our patients and then we create an individualized plan, customized specifically to meet your needs. At Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, you will receive professional, expert care with a personal touch. That is why patients regularly travel 2 hours each way once a week for treatments because they saw the tremendous value in the program and were so pleased with the results. Why Settle for Sight When You Could Have Vision? There are 17 visual skills and only 1 is usually tested in regular eye exams. That is why there is so much more to vision performance than what is measured by eyesight.

70% of what we process is through the Visual system. By partnering with us, we will create Visual Pathways that will stay in place the rest of your life. The Result: 70% of what you process for the rest of your life will be more efficient and more effective. We have demonstrated these successful results across a wide range of ages and abilities, from infants, children, and adults to autistic students, professional athletes, and special forces. We look forward to getting to know you and creating your customized plan.

Reading may seem simple, but it actually depends on a complex set of visual and cognitive skills working together. Dr. Rick explains that to read comfortably, both eyes must point with laser accuracy, the focusing system must engage, and the brain must integrate visual and auditory information to create meaning. When skills like convergence or focusing are weak, reading becomes tiring, confusing, or frustrating, not because of intelligence, but because the visual system can’t support the task efficiently.

• Reading requires precise eye pointing
• Focusing and convergence must work together
• Visual–auditory integration is essential for comprehension

Many people wonder whether presbyopia, the gradual loss of near focusing ability as we age can be delayed. Dr. Rick explains that while everyone eventually experiences it, healthy habits can slow the process. Just like stretching helps keep joints flexible, eye exercises, visual tracking, and regular focusing routines help keep the eye muscles working efficiently. Combined with good nutrition and physical activity, these habits may extend your near-vision comfort before reading glasses become necessary.

• Presbyopia is a normal age-related change
• Eye exercises and healthy habits can slow its progression
• Diet, tracking, and focusing routines help maintain flexibility

Improving your golf game doesn’t always require major swing changes, sometimes the most powerful adjustments come from simply learning to relax. Dr. Rick explains how controlled breathing can calm your mind and body, helping you perform more consistently on the course. When your exhale is longer than your inhale, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing tension and improving focus. This makes it a great pre-shot routine for putting, driving, or any pressure moment.

• Longer exhales activate relaxation
• Breathing helps reduce tension during shots
• Simple pre-shot breathing improves focus and consistency

Tracking your golf ball after impact can be frustrating, especially once it reaches its peak and begins to descend. Dr. Rick explains that while central vision gives detail, peripheral vision detects motion first, and using both together can make tracking the ball easier. A slight shift of your gaze beside the ball’s path can place it into your near-peripheral vision, helping you spot its downward movement more clearly.

• Central vision sees detail
• Peripheral vision detects motion first
• Slight gaze shifts help track descending golf shots

We actually have a dominant eye, a dominant ear, a dominant foot, and a dominant hand. Most of us notice it in our hands—try writing with your non-dominant hand and you can’t do it. Our eyes work the same way: the dominant eye takes over.

When you’re aligning a putt or trying to make solid contact with a golf ball, you want your dominant eye calling the shots. If your non-dominant eye takes over, you might scuff, chunk, or hit behind/in front of the ball.

A simple test: make a small opening with your hands at arm’s length while looking in a mirror (or have someone stand in front of you). Bring the opening to your face—whichever eye it lands over is likely dominant. Another test: hold your thumb out and line it up with a light switch, then close one eye at a time—the eye that keeps the thumb ā€œonā€ the switch is dominant.

Why it matters for golf: keep the dominant eye behind the ball. If you’re left-eye dominant, your nose can block that eye at the top of the backswing—so a tiny head-position tweak can keep that eye on the ball for crisper contact.

• Everyone has a dominant eye that guides alignment
• Easy at-home tests: hands-triangle in a mirror; thumb-to-light-switch
• In golf, keep your dominant eye behind the ball; small head adjustments can improve contact

Ever wonder why your golf swing feels a little off, even when your form looks right?

Dr. Rick Graebe OD, FOVDR, explains how your everyday glasses especially bifocals or progressives, can interfere with your golf game. When you look down at the ball, those lenses shift your focus and cause blurring, which can throw off your posture, alignment, and ultimately your swing.

For golfers over 40, investing in a pair of distance-only glasses specifically for golf can make a remarkable difference. You’ll maintain clear vision, better posture, and improve your overall consistency on the course.

So before your next round, consider upgrading your eyewear, it could be the simplest fix for a better game.

At the Neuro-Visual Performance Institute, we’re here to support your visual performance and help you see your best on and off the course. Let’s work together to ensure you play with clarity and confidence!
