ACHIEVE

ACHIEVE Thankfully not everyone shared this philosophy. The first programs were offered by volunteer teachers in donated space in a church basement.

ACHIEVE, a Chapter of The Arc New York, is the premier provider of services to individuals with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties and has proudly been a part of this community for 70 years. A Brief History of ACHIEVE
More than sixty years ago it was a common practice for children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to be placed in state institutions. Those families who chose to keep their children at home were told that their children were not eligible for and could not benefit from an education, something to which every child is entitled. Ten brave families - Walter and Kathryn Baird, Clyde and Elsie Brown, Howard and Esther Hall, Siegfried and Jane Heierman, Harry and Roye Sall, George and Josephine Sheehe, Joseph and Esther Stuckert, Robert and Annette Sturdevant, Floyd and Marian Taylor, and Glenn and Marian Young - who wanted a better life for their children joined with another group of parents in New York State to establish the Broome County Association for Retarded Children so that their children could attend school, receive an education, and lead a productive life. In September of 1952 when this organization was established, ACHIEVE's founding families started out with nothing but a common goal and dream. Parents went door-to-door to collect donations, and in a few years these passionate families were able to establish a school program and summer camp for their children and other children in the community. ACHIEVE continued to grow as we merged with the Chenango ARC in September of 2016. Our organization welcomed 400 new program participants and over 100 new employees to the ACHIEVE family. ACHIEVE’s founding families had a vision for the future. Today ACHIEVE has grown into an twenty-nine-million dollar agency operating an array of services in thirty-one facilities for more than 2,200 individuals. These families were always thinking, planning, and working, and today ACHIEVE continues to live out its mission - As a chapter of NYSARC, Inc. it is the mission of ACHIEVE to advocate for an enhanced quality of life through skill advancement, inclusion, integration, and independence of persons with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities through services provided in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties.

We’re to share this story from WBNG 12 News highlighting the incredible accomplishments of our ACHIEVE staff! 💙

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are truly the backbone of what we do at ACHIEVE. Their work is more than a job — it’s about offering support, building friendships, and empowering the individuals we support to create fulfilling lives rooted in independence and self-advocacy.

Recently, we celebrated graduates of ACHIEVE’s Micro-Credential Programs, honoring DSPs who chose to further their education while continuing their demanding, compassionate work. Through our partnership with SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus and New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, this program provides hands-on learning, college-level coursework, and the opportunity to earn a nationally recognized credential.

We’re proud to invest in this micro-credential program as a way to recognize DSPs as the professionals they are — giving them the tools, knowledge, and support to grow in a career that truly changes lives. Congratulations once again to all of our graduates, and thank you to every DSP who shows up every day with heart, dedication, and purpose. 💪✨

ACHIEVE, a chapter of the New York Arc, celebrated the accomplishments of dedicated staff members.

February’s Self-Advocacy Right of the Month: Relationships, Love & Family ❤️

In honor of February—the month of love—we’re highlighting the right to build meaningful relationships, express love, and be part of a family. Everyone has the right to form private, personal relationships, choose who they connect with, live with a spouse or significant other, control their own body, and access supports like counseling and family planning (within state and community laws).

With these rights come responsibilities—respecting boundaries, understanding laws, learning about healthy relationships, and recognizing that relationships involve shared care, communication, and accountability. Strong supports also play a key role by respecting privacy and dreams, providing education and resources, helping navigate legal responsibilities, and connecting individuals to helpful services.

❤️ Special February Self-Advocacy Committee Meeting – Join Us!
ACHIEVE’s Self-Advocacy Committee meets on the 2nd Monday of every month at 10:30 AM and this month, we’re excited to welcome Paul & Lori Lewis, who will share their inspiring journey of breaking free from control and self-doubt to discover love, independence, and the power of a supportive community.

Last night we celebrated an incredible group of ACHIEVE staff who completed the Direct Support Professional Micro-Credential program at SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus 🎓

Both our DSP 1 and DSP 3 graduates were recognized, and we are truly of their dedication and accomplishments. This program, created in collaboration with SUNY Morrisville and New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, gives our staff the opportunity to continue their education, strengthen their skills, and provide even better support to the individuals they work with every day.

We were especially honored to have several individuals attend the ceremony to cheer on their staff — a powerful reminder of the relationships at the heart of our work. This program is one way ACHIEVE invests in our team and therefore our mission: helping staff grow professionally while directly benefiting the people we support. Even better, these classes and certificates are transferable toward an associate degree in human services for those who want to continue their educational journey.

Congratulations to all of our graduates — your hard work inspires us! 💙

January was full of giving back and good times for our Chenango Rec crew! 💚

They volunteered at the Friends of Rogers Nature Center, helping separate milkweed seeds that will be planted this spring to support monarch butterflies. The group also made a fun stop at 8-Bit Bite in Johnson City for some delicious food and classic arcade games — the perfect mix of community service and play.

We love seeing our crew making a difference and enjoying time together!

Our Story

It all started with a dream - a dream of ten families who wanted a better life for their children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities - who created ACHIEVE. In 1952, the first programs were offered by volunteer teachers in donated space in a church basement. Parents went door-to-door to collect donations, and in a few years these passionate families were able to establish a school program and summer camp for their children and others in the community.

Today, we continue to ACHIEVE our dreams and have grown into an agency that operates a wide array of services across thirty facilities to more than 2,200 individuals. These families were always thinking, planning and working, and today ACHIEVE continues to live out its mission - As a chapter of NYSARC, Inc. it is the mission of ACHIEVE to advocate for an enhanced quality of life through skill advancement, inclusion, integration, and independence of persons with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities through services provided in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties.

I welcome you to come learn more about our organization, and thank you for 60+ years of support.
