Our Story

DCAI is committed to serving the needs of people with disabilities and have been doing so since 1980! DCAI was one of the very first Rural Independent Living Center established. We envision an inclusive environment that values independence and self-determination for persons of all abilities. Our mission is established based on 5 Core Services: Advocacy, Information and Referral, Skills Training, Peer Support and Transition. We offer a vast array of Independent Living services in Crawford, Dent, Iron, Reynolds, and Washington Counties. We also serve St. Francois, Phelps, Madison, Franklin and now, Shannon and Texas counties.

The Consumer Directed Services Program allows an adult with a disability to obtain assistance with daily tasks and activities of daily living in order to maintain their independence in their homes and communities. The Consumer Directed Services gives the person the ability to hire someone of their choosing to provide care for them. This person must be age of 18 or older and cannot be the spouse of the individual that needs the care. They will have to be registered with the Family Care Safety Registry and have a clean background.

  • Services are determined and authorized by the Department of Health and Senior Services.
  • DCAI also offers Independent Living Services including Medicaid/Medicare guidance and enrollment, assistance with financial management, Telecommunications Access Program, housing, Social Security, Veterans Administration, employer and accessibility issues.
