We memorialize because love does not end when a life ends, and we need a place for that love to continue living. A memorial quietly protects a person from being reduced to an absence, turning loss into lasting meaning and keeping a relationship alive in a new, gentler form. It gives shape to what cannot be touched—memory, grief, gratitude, and connection—and allows pain to become part of a story rather than a silent rupture. In remembering someone, we are also preserving the part of ourselves that was shaped by them, teaching the next generation that people matter beyond their presence, and affirming that a life once deeply loved still belongs in the world.

Does this image look normal to you?
When a loved one passes, would you forever place a casket on the mantel?
With regards to an urn, should the mantle be the end of the story?

If you answered no, please take a moment to read below.

Cremation is not the end; it’s just one part of the journey.
Memorializing your loved one matters. It’s how we process grief, celebrate their life, and keep their memory alive.
Creating a dedicated space—a cemetery plot or a columbarium niche and a memorial headstone marker—gives you and your family a place to return. To honor. To remember. To feel close again.
Because love doesn’t end with loss. And remembrance shouldn’t be temporary.
Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery can assist your family with options to memorialize your loved ones. We are here to assist you and your family in the bereavement process.

At exactly 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, amidst pouring rain, U.S. Army Capt. Henry Newstrom walked in measured steps onto the plaza to conduct the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Although Newstrom had performed this ritual more than 180 times during his tenure as commander of the guard, this time was different.

As he had always done, Newstrom asked the crowd to remain silent and standing for the ceremony, saluted the Tomb and inspected the oncoming guard. But instead of leaving the plaza after the changing of the guard, he stopped as Spc. Shane Burke walked to the center of the plaza and asked for everyone’s attention before making a special announcement.

“The ceremony that you have just witnessed was Capt. Henry Newstrom’s last guard change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,” Burke said. He added that Newstrom had served honorably for the last 19 months as commander of the guard, and that all the Tomb Guards wished him “good luck and Godspeed” in his future endeavors.
