Introducing our October Artist of the month, Don Hanselman!

Don Hanselman’s artistic odyssey is a narrative woven with threads of dedication, creativity, and a lifelong love affair with the visual arts. From humble beginnings in sixth grade, while attending Juan Lynn School in Victoria, Hanselman embarked on a journey of self-discovery, fueled by an innate curiosity and a keen eye for detail.

Drawing inspiration from the world outside his school window, Hanselman’s early sketches captured the essence of nature with remarkable precision. Under the mentorship of Mrs. Lassman, his seventh-grade art teacher, Hanselman’s talents flourished, mastering a myriad of techniques from charcoal to portraiture.

Throughout his academic years, Hanselman’s passion for art continued to blossom. Studying famous artists and their styles in tenth grade broadened his artistic horizons, leading to ventures into abstracts and pen and ink drawings. A testament to his burgeoning talent, Hanselman’s first sale an abstract depiction of Daffy Duck-marked the inception of a lifelong pursuit.

Hanselman’s artistic journey, however, was not confined to the canvas alone. A distinguished career spanning 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, followed by 23 years at NASA, provided a backdrop of rich experiences and diverse perspectives. Yet, it was during the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic that Hanselman rediscovered his passion for painting, picking up his brushes once more to create captivating works of art.

Stop by Citizens and view his art in person across from the chapel.
