"Eye irritation" (eye discomfort, itchiness or dryness) has a variety of causes, ranging from mild to serious. The most common causes of eye irritation include:

▪️ Blocked tear ducts that interfere with tear drainage, causing eye irritation, crusting or pain.
▪️ Contact lenses that haven’t been cleaned properly and contain foreign debris that causes discomfort, and could possibly leading to an infection.
▪️ Environmental irritants such as smoke, smog, chlorinated pool water and even dry weather.
▪️ Foreign objects, from an eyelash to dirt particles, can get into your eye and lead to irritation.
▪️ Several infections, including bacterial, fungal or viral infections, can cause eye discomfort.
▪️ Styes (small, painful growths) may form around or on your eyelids and may also cause eye swelling.

Remember to always prioritize eye health and consult your eye care doctor to help alleviate your symptoms!

Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a common eye condition in adults older than 55 where the gel inside the eye separates from the retina. Symptoms can include sudden momentary flashes of light in the periphery of your vision or new floaters that look like little specks or strings floating around.

While PVD is typically harmless, it can sometimes lead to more serious issues like retinal detachment. Don't take any chances! Consult an eye doctor promptly if you notice these signs. Early detection can make all the difference. 👓🌟

Eye safety with makeup:✨👁️

▪️ Avoid flaky metallics & glitters; glitter eye makeup is a common cause of corneal irritation or infection, especially for people who wear contact lenses.
▪️ Only use eye-safe cosmetics.
▪️ Replace eye makeup every 3 months to avoid infection-causing bacteria.
▪️ Never share eye makeup, even with family or close friends! 🚫
▪️ If you develop an eye infection, like pink eye, immediately toss all of your eye makeup and don't use eye makeup until the infection is gone.

When the flash strikes, our pupils can't react fast enough. The result? A bright reflection from the fundus (the interior surface of the eye) and out through the pupil!

When a contact lens gets stuck on the surface of your eye or has been dislodged, it's likely that it has folded in half or shifted under your upper eyelid. To remove a dislodged lens, we recommend that you follow these steps to avoid causing your eyes harm.

1️⃣ Wash you hands.
2️⃣ Apply a few drops of contact lens solution, sterile saline, or rewetting eye drops to lubricate & rinse the eye.
3️⃣ Gently massage your eyelid to reposition the lens into a position where you can see it more easily to remove it.

Struggling? Stay calm, and repeat these steps, allowing the solution or eye drops to soak the affected area so the lens will move. Don't apply more lubrication if your eyes are watering heavily - instead, wipe away the excess moisture and use a dry finger to try and retrieve the lens. If you are still struggling, see your professional eye care doctor for help removing the lens.

Remember, the sun's intense rays can cause irreparable harm to the delicate structures of our eyes. Solar retinopathy is a real and dangerous consequence of viewing an eclipse unprotected. Always ensure you're using certified eclipse glasses or indirect viewing methods. It only takes a moment's exposure to risk a lifetime of vision damage. Educate, equip, and enjoy safely! 🌒👓

Don't worry, your eyes have six different muscles to help them move around and back!

Adult strabismus (crossed eyes), however, is a condition that can result from disease, uncorrected vision, or from muscle or nerve damage. If you are experiencing symptoms such as having eyes that appear out of alignment, weakness in or around the eye, or feeling like something is pulling around your eyes, vision changes such as double vision (seeing two of one image), blurry vision, trouble reading, or a loss of depth perception, or constantly tilting or turning your head to see an image clearly, please consult with your eye care doctor right away.

Ever wonder why we have different eye colors? 🤔 It's all thanks to melanin, the same stuff that gives our skin and hair its color!

Fun fact: If you've got blue eyes, you share a common ancestor with other blue-eyed folks due to a lack of variation in the part of your DNA responsible for melanin production, whereas brown-eyed individuals have a lot more variation.

Have you ever wondered why your eyes feel dry and your vision blurs after staring at screens for too long? Let's dive into the fascinating world of tears and our eyes!

The illustration here shows the complex mixture of a watery solution that makes up our tears from the lacrimal gland, which includes oil from glands inside our eyelids, and mucus produced by cells on the inside of our eyelids.

The cornea is our eye’s clear front part that does most of the focusing. There are about 7 billion tiny finger-like structures called microvilli on the surface of the cornea. Each of these have mucin molecules attached that hold the tear film on the surface of the eye.
This tear film needs a uniform thickness for clear vision. It’s able to stay that way because every time we blink, the tear film is replenished.

While engrossed in our screens, we tend to blink less, causing the microvilli to get damaged and release their mucin molecules into the tear film. This causes dry spots to start appearing in the tear film, causing our vision to fluctuate between blinks.
When we resume regular blinking, the microvilli structure is slowly restored, but this can take minutes to hours! And if we're continuously staring at screens, there might not be enough time for full restoration, leading to persistent dry eyes.

So, remember to take frequent breaks and blink often when working on screens. Your eyes will thank you!

For those with diabetes, your risk of permanent vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy is real and significant. It is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, and nearly 1 in 3 people with diabetes develop this condition at some point in their lives.

The good news though is you can reduce the risk by managing your blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and treatment. If caught early, retinopathy can often resolve with improved blood glucose control. However, in its late stages, while treatment can halt further damage, any vision loss incurred is permanent and irreversible.

Don't take chances with your sight. Prioritize your eye health today by scheduling your yearly exam with us at (760) 241-1010!

The retina contains millions of light-sensitive cells called photoreceptors (rods and cones) that capture light and convert it into electrical signals to the brain so you can see!

Think of it as the "projection screen" - when light enters the eye, it passes through the cornea, the aqueous humor, the lens, and the vitreous humor before hitting the retina. The retina then captures this light, processes it, and sends signals to the brain through the optic nerve.

Maintaining the health of your retina is crucial for good vision. Conditions like retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy can seriously affect your vision. Regular eye check-ups are a must! 🩺
