What is true wisdom, and where does it come from? The world has much to offer that is labeled as wisdom, but Scripture tells us that it is actually foolishness. The reason the world is foolish is not necessarily because it is ignorant; it is because they reject the Lord and what He has to offer. Proverbs 1:7 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction." True wisdom and instruction come from Christ, and to reject Him is to reject wisdom. So how do we get wisdom? Solomon answers that question as well by reminding us to listen to the instruction that he gives. Solomon writes to his son and instructs him to take his teachings and wear them like a necklace. Scripture elsewhere speaks to this as well, when the Lord instructs Moses and people of Israel to bind the commandments and word of the Lord to their hearts and minds and take them everywhere they go. In doing so, they would be shown favor from the Lord and receive His blessings. Ultimately, if we do that, we will live according to that word and therefore be wise. Another proverb that is familiar to us is "live and learn." We use the experience we gain in this life, learn from our mistakes, and then live accordingly. But Scripture says the opposite. The Lord says to us, "Come; learn, and live." We don't have to wonder what the Lord requires of us, or how to navigate the difficulties of life. We have the bible, and within its pages we have instruction from God Himself on how to think, speak, and live righteously. The Lord invites us to come to Him daily, and the one who does so will gain true wisdom.
