🤒 Fevers in Kids: What Parents Should Know 💙

A fever is usually a sign that your child’s body is fighting an illness. In children, a temperature above 100.4°F (38.0°C) is considered a fever.

What Causes Fevers

Fevers often happen with common infections like colds or stomach bugs — they’re not the illness itself, just the body’s way of responding.

How to Help Your Child Feel Better

💧 Fluids first: Fevers can make kids lose fluids faster, so offer water, diluted juice, or an oral rehydration drink to prevent dehydration.

👕 Dress light: Avoid bundling in heavy clothes — a single layer helps them stay comfortable.

💊 Medication if needed: Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can reduce fever and discomfort — but be sure to use the correct dose for your child’s age and weight. For infants under 2 years, talk with us or a pharmacist first.

❌ Avoid: Alcohol baths or cold sponging — these can be unsafe and aren’t recommended.

When to Contact a Medical Professional

Please call Advanced Pediatrics at 📞 703-938-5555 if your child has a fever and:

• Is younger than 3 months old with a temperature of 100.4°F or higher.
• Appears very sick, very drowsy, or unusually fussy.
• Has symptoms like stiff neck, severe headache, severe sore throat, rash, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, or signs of dehydration such as dry mouth or fewer wet diapers.
• Has had a seizure or a fever that repeatedly goes above 104°F.
• The fever lasts more than 24 hours in children under 2, or more than 72 hours in older kids.

A Note for Parents

Most fevers can be managed at home with rest, fluids, and comfort care. But you know your child best — if something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to call. We’re here to help you every step of the way. 💛

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 🤍

Today we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his lasting message of kindness, service, and respect for all. His work reminds us that even small acts — listening, helping others, standing up for fairness, and showing compassion — can make a meaningful difference in our communities.

At Advanced Pediatrics, we strive to create a welcoming, supportive environment for every child and family we serve. Today is a great opportunity to talk with kids about empathy, inclusion, and caring for one another.

Wishing our families a thoughtful and meaningful MLK Day. 💙

✨ How much sleep do kids really need? ✨
Sleep needs change as children grow — and getting enough is essential for growth, learning, mood, behavior, and overall health. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports the sleep duration ranges from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), which HealthyChildren.org highlights as guidelines for total daily sleep.

Here’s your quick age-by-age guide 👇

👶 0–3 mo: ~16–17 hrs/day (short bursts)
🍼 4–12 mo: 12–16 hrs (naps + night)
🧒 1–2 yrs: 11–14 hrs
🎨 3–5 yrs: 10–13 hrs
📚 6–12 yrs: 9–12 hrs
🎧 13–18 yrs: 8–10 hrs

Getting the right amount each day helps with attention, behavior, emotional balance, memory & physical health. Make sleep a priority — set consistent bedtimes, calming routines, and tech-free wind-downs. 💡

📅 Back to Routine After Winter Break! 💙

Winter holidays are full of fun, but the shift in schedules can make it tough for kids (and parents!) to get back into regular routines. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, consistent family routines help children feel secure, behave better, and sleep well — especially after a break.

Here are a few gentle ways to restore rhythms at home:

🔹 Set regular bed and wake-up times — even if it takes a few days to adjust.
🔹 Plan meals & snacks at predictable times — helps balance energy and behavior.
🔹 Keep consistent homework/playtime routines — structure supports focus and calm.
🔹 Include simple family traditions — a bedtime read, after-school check-in, or weekend walk.

Routines aren’t rigid rules — they’re predictable rhythms that help children feel safe, confident, and ready to take on each day.

Need support getting back on track? We’re here to help — from sleep guidance to school readiness and more. 💛
