Executive function challenges don’t always look like forgetting homework.

They show up across the day, in moments like:

🗓️ Planning the day
▶️ Getting started on tasks
😤🙂 Managing emotions
🧠 Controlling impulses

When several of these skills are working hard at the same time, the day can feel heavier than expected.

This isn’t about effort or motivation.

It’s about how many executive function skills are being asked to work together, all day long.

Once you start noticing where executive function shows up, it becomes easier to respond with support instead of frustration. 💛

✍️ National Handwriting Day

When we think about handwriting challenges, we often picture messy letters or slow writing. But for many children, handwriting struggles go deeper.

Dysgraphia is a learning difference that affects both the physical act of writing and the thinking skills behind written expression. A child may have difficulty with letter formation, spacing, and pencil control, and also with organizing ideas, putting thoughts into words, or getting ideas onto paper at all.

We will be talking more about dysgraphia next month, including what it can look like at different ages and how the right supports can make writing feel more manageable and less frustrating for kids.

When it comes to ADHD, “keep them busy” isn’t just parenting advice, there’s real science behind it.

After such a strong response to Dr. Lisa Bennett’s recent podcast appearance, we’re excited to bring her back for a live Ask The Experts event focused on how structure, movement, and intentional scheduling support children with ADHD.

In this session, we’ll explore:

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ Why some kids need more movement to focus and others need downtime
🎨 How structured activities support executive function and emotional regulation
📅 When being busy helps and when it becomes too much
✅ How to reset when schedules fall apart

This is a live conversation designed to give parents practical, realistic tools they can use right away.

AAC is often talked about as something we give to students.

But what if we designed AAC supports with them?

In our latest episode of More Than Words, Tristen sits down with Madison Brumbaugh, M.S., CCC-SLP to explore what it really means to involve students in the design of their communication supports. From low-tech tools like visual organizers to high-tech AAC systems, Madison shares why student voice, preferences, and autonomy matter, and how co-design can lead to stronger engagement, better literacy access, and more meaningful communication.

Whether you are brand new to AAC or already using communication supports, this conversation offers practical takeaways for educators, therapists, and families who want AAC to truly work for the student using it.

How can one image prevent an executive function meltdown before it starts?

Visual schedules are an incredibly helpful tool for kids who work hard on executive function skills. This one is used for an after-school routine when kids are coming home.

Here’s why it works so well 👇
👟 Simple, one-step directions. Unpack backpack. Take off shoes. Put coat away. Bathroom.
🏠 Strategic placement. This schedule is right on the front stairs, so the routine is visible the moment kids walk in.

Visual schedules reduce decision fatigue by taking “what do I do next?” out of the equation. That’s especially helpful after a break, when routines are still settling back in.

If there’s a part of the day that feels extra tough right now, a visual schedule can help routines feel smoother and more predictable again. 💛
