In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, we’re focusing on something many families experience but don’t always hear enough about.

Ever feel unsure what’s autism and what might be something else?

You’re not alone. Many co-occurring conditions can look similar to autism, which can make getting the right support feel overwhelming.

In this month’s Ask the Experts, our expert, Madison Brumbaugh is breaking it down in a clear, supportive, no-jargon way.

Understanding Autism and Co-Occurring Conditions

Autism rarely travels alone. Learn how to recognize co-occurring conditions and better support your child.

During Autism Acceptance Month, we’re focusing on what support actually looks like for each child.

It might include:

🧠 helping a child understand how language works
🛠️ building systems to reduce overwhelm
🗣️ supporting communication in a way that feels natural
🪜 creating structure so a child can feel successful

Every child has a different profile.

And the more we understand that, the better we can support them.
That’s something we’ll also be talking about in our upcoming Ask the Experts session.

Some skills just don’t get enough attention during the school year

For many students who learn differently, the challenge isn’t effort.

It’s that certain skills aren’t being directly addressed in the classroom.

Things like:
🧠 decoding unfamiliar words
📝 organizing thoughts for writing
🚀 getting started on assignments
⚙️ managing multiple steps at once

During the school year, the focus is often on keeping up with the curriculum.

There isn’t always time to slow down and target the underlying skills.

That’s where summer can make a real difference.

With the right support, students can:
📚 build stronger reading and writing foundations
🧠 develop strategies that make school feel more manageable
✨ gain confidence in skills that haven’t fully clicked yet

For many children, autism is just one part of the picture

Many children receive an autism diagnosis, but there are often other layers that can be easy to miss.

You might also be noticing:
😟 anxiety
🧠 attention challenges
✋ sensory differences
😴 sleep struggles

These can impact how your child learns, connects, and moves through their day.

In this month’s Ask the Experts session, we’ll help you:
🧠 understand what commonly co-occurs
🏠 recognize what you’re seeing at home
🩺 know what to bring to your child’s care team

No jargon. No overwhelm. Just clear, practical insight.

Most parents are focused on helping their child. But what if one of the most powerful ways to support your child is actually by starting with yourself?

In this episode, we sit down with therapist Stephanie Kaiser of to talk about parent mental health, burnout, and why your well-being plays such a critical role in your child’s success. We also break down what therapy really looks like and how small shifts can make a big difference at home.

If you have ever felt overwhelmed, reactive, or unsure where to start, this conversation is for you.

✨ Listen now and take the first step toward supporting your child by supporting yourself.

If your child can tell you an incredibly detailed story, but struggles to write more than a few simple sentences, there’s usually more going on.

Writing isn’t just about having ideas.

It’s about organizing those ideas, building sentences, and knowing how to get started without feeling overwhelmed.

That’s exactly what we focus on in our writing program.

We break writing down into manageable steps so students can express what they’re actually thinking, not just what feels easiest to get on paper.

👉 If this sounds familiar, our summer programs are a great place to work on it.

https://www.readingllcenter.com/services/intensive-programs-camps/What actually improves over the summer?

When support is targeted, we tend to see a few key shifts:

Reading becomes:
😌 less effortful
✅ more accurate
👂 easier to understand

Writing becomes:
🗂️ more organized
😁 less overwhelming
1️⃣ quicker to start

And overall:
⬆️ confidence increases
⬇️ frustration decreases

This isn’t about doing more.

It’s about finally working on the skills that don’t get enough attention during the school year.
