A personal note from Sytera Field on making gratitude into a rebellious act of joy this November. 🙏
“Send a much-deserved message of gratitude toward your body—for its strength, its resilience, and for carrying you through this wild ride we call “life”.”
If you’ve been to my classes anytime in the last 23 years, you’ve heard me end with those words. And now that it’s November, the official month of giving thanks, I thought I’d dig into the word gratitude itself. Turns out, its roots mean “to praise, to celebrate; to be in contact with the Divine.”
So basically, when you’re in a state of gratitude, you’re already vibing with the Divine. No incense required.
Science backs this up too (because sometimes we like data with our dharma): gratitude boosts happiness, reduces anxiety, and helps us see life through a brighter, more grounded lens. Translation: gratitude makes you feel good and that’s not an accident.
But here’s the main point. Cultivating gratitude is a choice. So… will you choose it with me?
Yogis have been onto this for a few millennia. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the OG yoga manual, lays out the Eight Limbs of Yoga, including the Yamas and Niyamas (basically, the dos and don’ts of being a decent, peaceful human). One Niyama, Santosha, means contentment. And the shortcut to Santosha? You guessed it :gratitude.
When we actively acknowledge what’s good, even the small stuff, we tap into connection, health, joy, and that deep exhale that says, “Okay, I’m good.”
And here’s the best part: choosing gratitude doesn’t need to be hard, corny, or time-consuming.
Try one of these:
1) Write a thank-you letter. Remember those? To your teacher, your best friend, your mail carrier or anyone who’s added something to your life.
2) Keep a gratitude list. Once a day, once a week, once a month. Jot down what lights you up.
3) Sit and breathe. Simply close your eyes. Inhale gratitude, exhale everything else.
You don’t need a perfect life to feel grateful. You just need to notice the good stuff that’s already there.
