With one chance to get it right...Generational Continuity of knowledge means everything to Funeral Arrangements

Family-owned & Operated makes a very difficult assumption. It means the next generation of your family accepts the mantle and responsibility to continue the stewardship of this vocation. That's not a given! But it is an important desire to every good soul who hangs a shingle and devotes their life to serving others in their time of grief. Many of the children and grandchildren of 'Founding Funeral Directors' start learning the intricacies of the business side of operations at a very early age. Stacking chairs, cleaning, touching up paint, moving furniture and equipment around, and all manner of tasks associated with welcoming hundreds of people each week into your gathering spaces.

As time progresses, those same children become more absorbed into the care and compassion side of this business. In the case of Knollcrest and Steuerle Chapel, they treat this vocation as a ministry, as Bob Van Staalduinen's (Bob Van to most) father was indeed a minister. Bob beams with pride with the fact that all of his children helped him and his wife in the funeral home. His eldest two are making a commitment to the industry: Holly and Josh. Pride or not, the lessons weren't easy, and both children understood the difference between "Dad" and "Boss". The first being loving, the latter, being a tutor, filled with strong expectations.

Holly shares that it's not easy, "and that's a good thing". Josh repeats his father's mantra that "you only get one chance to get it right". Both are also already encouraging the next generation of Bob's grandchildren to carefully consider this important vocation. Maintaining the legacy of Family Owned & Operated for generations is a lifelong mission of love and compassion. Whether the next generation accepts the invitation to continue that legacy is never for sure. But the lessons learned in the process are always useful.
