All Tanner Urgent Care locations, including Tanner Urgent Care for Kids, will be closed Sunday, April 5, in observance of the Easter holiday. Normal hours will resume Monday, April 6.

Emergency departments at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, East Alabama and Villa Rica, as well as Higgins General Hospital, remain open 24/7 for care.

Last month, we posted facts to help our Tanner Urgent Care patients learn more about antibiotics. This month, we’re turning our attention to steroids. What are they, and how can they help us?

First, it’s important to note that corticosteroids are different than anabolic steroids. While athletes and bodybuilders often use anabolic steroids to increase muscle mass, corticosteroids — often called “steroids” for short — reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Learn more below:

🦴 Steroid use can cause bone thinning, weight gain, high blood sugar and more.

⚠️ Repeated use of steroids can cause cumulative health effects like sleep disorders, glaucoma, cataracts and high blood pressure.

🔋 A quick course has only mild side effects, like extra energy or trouble sleeping.

🍽️ If you experience stomach irritation, try to take your steroids with food or milk.

🫁 They treat a variety of conditions, such as asthma, allergies, arthritis and eczema.

💊 They come in many forms, including pills, creams or inhalers.

🗒️ Common names include fluticasone (Flonase), prednisone and hydrocortisone.
