LANE. The English surname Lane is local in origin, being one of those names derived from the place where a man once lived or held land. In this case it is derived from the Old English word “Lanu” and literally denotes a “dweller in the lane”. The surname is essentially a south of England and Midlands surname, found especially in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. In Ireland it is also used as a synonym of the Gaelic surname Lehane (O Liathain, probably from “loath”, grey). Early recorded instances of the name include a reference to Ralph de la Lane in the Pipe Rolls for Kent in 1176 and Osbertus in Lane in the Curia Regis Rolls for Surrey in 1212. Adam Ithelane appears in the Assize Rolls for Bedfordshire in 1227 and Walter ate Lane in the Assize Rolls for Cambridgeshire in 1260. Finally, Nicholas ate Lane appears in the Subsidy Rolls for Worcestershirein 1275 and Thomas in le Lane in the Subsidy Rolls for Derbyshire in 1327. The variant Lane shows the characteristic “o” of the Midland dialects. This surname was established in the United States at an early date with records showing, for example, that Richard Lane, aged thirty eight, Alice Lane, aged thirty, Samuel Lane, aged seven, Jo Lane, aged four and Oziell Lane, aged three, all sailed to the Island of Providence in 1635, having taken the customary oath of Allegiance and Supremacy to the king before embarking. The motto below refers to “the great and signal service performed by John Lane Esq. of Bentley in the county Stanford, in his ready concurring to the preservation of King Charles II after the battle of Worcester “ (Burke’s General Armory).

BEAZON of ARMS: Per pale azure and gules three saltires couped argent.

MOTTO: Garde le Roy.
Translation: Guard the King.
