"I never wanted cancer to define me. For more than 40 years, I’ve openly shared my health challenges – Hodgkin’s Disease in 1981, infertility and infant loss in the 1990s, and breast cancer in 2018. But I’ve never wanted the darkness of illness to overshadow the light of the extraordinary gift of life I’ve been given. Even in the hardest days, hope prevailed – and still does."

Ann Lovell shared her story with us, including her initial diagnosis and late effects, one of which was another cancer diagnosis. Thank you, Ann, for trusting us to share your experience. You can read her full story on our website here: https://www.hodgkinsinternational.com/voice/ann-lovell/

Here is a GREAT site for cancer survivors, developed by Larissa Nekhlyudov and colleagues- "Cancer Survivorship in Primary Care." Make sure you check out the resources listed at the bottom, especially the Lancet journal series. Fantastic.

A one-stop repository where primary care providers can access medical information and clinical guidance

How great is this?! This is a photo of two of our Board members, Larissa Nekhlyudov and Mark Haseloff, who just got together for the first time in Australia! Larissa is there for a research study, and Mark hails from Adelaide. We are so lucky to have them both. This meeting gives new meaning to the word "international!"

Are there any particular resources (blogs, organizations, websites) that were especially helpful for information or support during or after cancer?

"Scanxiety," or the fear that accompanies follow-up testing for cancer survivors, is a common and understandable consequence of what we've all been through. In this article, nurses at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC offer some of their "tried and true" methods for coping with this. While the focus in this article is largely on breast cancer, the phenomenon of scanxiety does not belong to a single cancer diagnosis. It affects us all.

In response to the intense fear that so many people experience around imaging tests, MSK radiology nurses developed new recommendations that are helping patients everywhere.

We've heard from a lot of you lately about the struggles of getting "back to normal" after cancer. At Hodgkin's International, we know that it's just not that simple.

Long-term survivors of Hodgkin Lymphoma are at risk for serious health issues as a consequence of earlier treatment, particularly older forms of radiation and chemotherapy. Some risks include breast cancer, cardiovascular conditions, subsequent cancers, and distress or psychosocial problems.

We're told things will get easier post-treatment, then we're hit with these unexpected late effects. And sometimes, those late effects feel just like getting a rock instead of candy on Halloween.

While there is a great deal of research on late effects, many Hodgkin’s survivors are still often completely unaware of their risks. Worse, many of their health care providers are also uninformed.

A combined effort by researchers, clinicians, medical institutions, cancer advocates and survivors to make sure that late effects are acknowledged, understood, and treated appropriately will make an enormous difference in the lives of many.

We need more health care providers who are trained in the area of late effects. We need more survivorship clinics. We need more survivorship care plans in the hands of survivors and their caretakers.

We need to make a concerted, global effort not just to study late effects, but to DO something about them – to educate survivors, monitor them closely, anticipate outcomes, and support them as they face each further challenge.

Help get the word out by sharing your experience of late effects with others and emphasizing the importance of quality survivorship care. You never know who your message could reach. Your story can make a difference.

Who was your biggest supporter through cancer?

10/23/2025

Coping after cancer treatment is HARD.

Cancer is isolating and healing is exhausting. Taking things slow after treatment is vital.

Give yourself grace and the time you need to process what you’ve just been through.

Something that can make a world of difference for survivors, especially in the long term, is finding a primary care physician who is familiar with cancer and the possible late effects that can happen. They are key in helping you monitor for long term issues down the road.

Hodgkin’s International helps educate hodgkin’s survivors – especially long term survivors – on potential late effects and other issues to monitor for. Learn more on our website, Hodgkinsinternational.com
