HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA, AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING?
I’ve been practicing Yoga since I was 14, so almost 11 years; and I’ve been teaching for 3 years.
I got my certification in 2023 - I went to school at Westchester University in Pennsylvania and we had a program where you could get certified as a yoga teacher while doing your bachelors. So, I was taking the classes on top of all my normal classes, but at the end of my program, when I graduated, I told my mentor, Allison, I’m not ready yet, I don’t feel ready; and she let me stay in the program for an extra semester.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO YOGA?
When I was 14 my sister brought home this Rodney Yee DVD and I started doing the videos with her because I was playing soccer at the time pretty competitively, and I needed a way to just stretch between practices. I ended up sticking with it and by the time I was 16 or 17, I was like, let me go to a studio and see what the vibe is, instead of just following a video.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STYLE, CLASS, OR POSE TO TEACH AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING?
I was trained in a traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa way. However, we also focused a lot on restorative yoga, and that’s actually mostly what I teach now. That seems to be what I see my students benefit from most, so I’d say that Restorative is probably my favorite thing to teach. Although, I love Ashtanga for my personal practice as well.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR STUDENTS TO TAKE AWAY FROM EACH CLASS?
Well, it depends on the class but, I would say just to feel better than they did when they first came in because everyone’s dealing with something. So if I can help in any small way throughout the day, then that’s really nice. And also, a reminder to breathe deep.
DO YOU HAVE ANY LAST THOUGHTS, ADVICE, OR TIPS FOR US?
I would say that in a world full of technology, and hustle culture, and distractions learn to slow down and be mindful of your movements and of your breath.
