Most children who W sit aren’t doing anything “wrong”… they’re doing what feels easiest for their body.

W sitting can give a child extra stability when their core strength or balance is still developing. For some, it’s simply a comfortable habit. For others, it can be a small clue that their body might need a bit more support with strength, coordination, or posture.

The key isn’t constant correction or telling a child off. It’s noticing patterns, gently encouraging other positions, and understanding what their body might be communicating underneath the behaviour.

If you’ve ever been told to “stop” your child W sitting but weren’t sure why, this will help you see the bigger picture.

We are so excited to share the details for this year’s Adaptive Swim Program—creating a safe, supportive, and FUN environment for every swimmer to learn and grow!

📍 Location: Allenton Bay Cliff Recreation Center

This 5-week program is designed to build confidence, encourage independence, and celebrate every win—big or small. Whether it’s getting comfortable in the water or strengthening swim skills, we’re here for it all 💙

One of the biggest misunderstandings about autism is what people think it looks like. People often picture one very specific image when they hear the word autism.

Maybe they imagine a child who doesn’t speak at all. Or a child who avoids eye contact. Or someone who sits alone, completely disconnected from the world around them.

But autism doesn’t always show up the way people expect. The truth is, autism is incredibly diverse. Some autistic individuals talk a lot.
Some talk very little.

Some can hold long conversations about topics they love. Others may communicate through gestures, devices, scripting, or behavior.

Some children appear very social on the outside.
They may smile, laugh, and want to be around others. But that doesn’t always mean social interaction is easy for them.

And some struggle deeply in social situations, trying to understand body language, tone of voice, sarcasm, or the unspoken rules that seem to come naturally to others.

Some autistic children excel academically.
Others work incredibly hard just to get through the school day. Some crave routine and predictability. Others seek out constant movement and stimulation.

Two autistic children can have the same diagnosis… and look completely different in how they move through the world. That’s because autism isn’t a single story. It’s a spectrum of experiences, strengths, challenges, personalities, and ways of thinking.

And for many families raising autistic children, one of the hardest parts isn’t the diagnosis itself…It’s the assumptions people make when they think they already know what autism “should” look like.

Behind every diagnosis is a unique individual.
And the more we understand that autism doesn’t fit into one simple box… the more space we create for our kids to be seen for who they truly are. 🩵

Every autistic child and adult is different, and that’s something the world is still learning. What is one thing about your child or grandchild that people would never guess about autism just by looking at them? I’d love to hear. 🤔

I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to delve into the advantages of VBMAPP assessment and Natural Environment Teaching for children with disabilities in Vietnam, and I was deeply inspired by the passion and expertise of the majority, who showed a tremendous dedication to learning and extended a warm and heartfelt welcome.

Ứng dụng VB-MAPP và Natural Environment Teaching (NET) trong can thiệp trẻ rối loạn phổ tự kỷ

Trung tâm Hoàng Đức tổ chức khóa tập huấn chuyên môn nhằm chia sẻ các phương pháp đánh giá và xây dựng chương trình can thiệp dựa trên bằng chứng trong lĩnh vực Phân tích Hành vi Ứng dụng (ABA).

Khóa học tập trung vào việc sử dụng VB-MAPP để đánh giá mức phát triển ngôn ngữ – học tập của trẻ, xác định các rào cản và xây dựng mục tiêu can thiệp phù hợp. Đồng thời, chương trình giới thiệu Natural Environment Teaching (NET) – phương pháp dạy kỹ năng trong môi trường tự nhiên giúp tăng động lực học tập và khả năng ứng dụng kỹ năng trong đời sống.

Sau khóa học, người tham dự có thể:
• Hiểu cấu trúc và ý nghĩa của công cụ đánh giá VB-MAPP
• Phân tích kết quả đánh giá để xác định ưu tiên can thiệp
• Xây dựng mục tiêu can thiệp cá nhân hóa dựa trên dữ liệu đánh giá

 Vai trò của VB-MAPP trong đánh giá trẻ rối loạn phổ tự kỷ
 Cấu trúc và các thành phần của công cụ
• Các thành phần chính của VB-MAPP
 Milestones Assessment – Đánh giá các mốc phát triển hành vi ngôn ngữ
 Barriers Assessment – Xác định các rào cản trong học tập và giao tiếp
 Transition Assessment – Đánh giá khả năng học trong môi trường giáo dục ít hạn chế hơn
 Task Analysis & Skills Tracking – Phân tích và theo dõi sự phát triển kỹ năng
 Placement & Goal Setting – Định hướng chương trình và mục tiêu can thiệp
• Ứng dụng kết quả đánh giá
 Xác định các lĩnh vực ưu tiên can thiệp
 Xây dựng mục tiêu phù hợp với mức phát triển của trẻ
 Thiết kế kế hoạch can thiệp cá nhân hóa
 Thiết lập mục tiêu ngắn hạn và dài hạn
 Theo dõi tiến trình và hỗ trợ khái quát kỹ năng
🕕 Ngày 3: Natural Environment Teaching (NET) trong can thiệp ABA
• Giới thiệu NET
 Khái niệm và vai trò của NET trong can thiệp ABA
 Sự khác biệt giữa NET và các phương pháp dạy có cấu trúc như DTT
• Nguyên tắc cốt lõi
 Học dựa trên động lực và hứng thú của trẻ
 Tận dụng các tình huống tự nhiên để dạy kỹ năng
 Tăng khả năng khái quát và ứng dụng kỹ năng trong đời sống
• Ứng dụng thực hành
 Lồng ghép mục tiêu giao tiếp, xã hội và kỹ năng chức năng trong hoạt động hằng ngày
 Kết hợp NET với các chiến lược ABA khác để nâng cao hiệu quả can thiệp

𝑫𝒊𝒆̂̃𝒏 𝒈𝒊𝒂̉/ 𝒄𝒉𝒖𝒚𝒆̂𝒏 𝒈𝒊𝒂 𝒕𝒂̣̂𝒑 𝒉𝒖𝒂̂́𝒏:
Sara Lamont, M.Ed., BCBA, LBA

Sara là chuyên gia phân tích hành vi được chứng nhận quốc tế (BCBA) với nhiều năm kinh nghiệm trong lĩnh vực can thiệp hành vi, giáo dục đặc biệt và đào tạo phụ huynh cho trẻ có rối loạn phát triển. Cô hiện là Clinical Director và Founder của Ascend with ABA tại Virginia Beach, Hoa Kỳ, nơi cung cấp các dịch vụ ABA theo định hướng hiểu biết về sang chấn (trauma-informed) cho trẻ có nhu cầu hỗ trợ phức tạp, bao gồm trẻ tự kỷ và trẻ có bệnh lý y khoa đi kèm.

Bên cạnh công việc lâm sàng, Sara tham gia nghiên cứu tại May Institute trong dự án do Bộ Quốc phòng và Bộ Giáo dục Hoa Kỳ tài trợ, tập trung so sánh các mô hình can thiệp ABA và phát triển chương trình đào tạo phụ huynh có cấu trúc.

Sara có bằng Bachelor of Science (Elon University), Master of Education (Regent University) và được đào tạo chuyên sâu về Applied Behavior Analysis tại Florida Institute of Technology. Cô cũng là giáo viên Kids Yoga và Mindfulness được chứng nhận, thường tích hợp các yếu tố này trong đào tạo và thực hành chuyên môn. Trước đó, Sara từng là giáo viên giáo dục đặc biệt và quản lý chương trình giáo dục cho thanh thiếu niên có nguy cơ cao tại Hoa Kỳ.

Great way to meet new friends at a nice cozy nice!

Join parents and caregivers of individuals with Autism for our monthly Parents' Night Out in Virginia Beach parents/ caregivers only. We will come together in a safe manner to support one another face to face. Meetings will be facilitated by board member and Medicaid mentor, Theresa Zano-McMillan, and senior volunteer, Christina Morrow.
Please remember that this is an in-person support group meeting for parents and caregivers of individuals with Autism.
