To the ODU community, we are thinking of you. In the wake of what has happened, we want to offer something small but meaningful. Healing Arts Center is providing free Reiki sessions to ODU students and staff because no one should have to navigate something this hard without support. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive practice that helps calm the nervous system, reduce physical tension, and create space for emotional healing.

Your session will be with Victoria, a trauma-informed Reiki practitioner who creates a safe, grounded space for every client. She is sensitive to your needs, works entirely at your pace, and honors your comfort every step of the way. Reiki is not a replacement for professional mental health care, but it is a meaningful complement to it.

When something painful happens, I identify what boundary was violated.

Your brain registers boundary violations as threats. Your body responds through a racing heart, tense muscles, poor sleep, and resentment you can’t shake.

Understanding the 7 types of boundaries changed how I navigate difficult moments.

Working with your body helps you notice what a “yes” or “no” feels like, calm your nervous system so you can make clearer decisions, practice asking for what you need, and release stuck patterns from past violations.

You wouldn’t ignore warning lights in your car until the engine smokes. Most of us do this to ourselves. We wait for a breakdown before seeking help.

Your body is always trying to tell you something. We need to create the space to hear it.

When your mind feels stressed, your body holds tension. When your body stays activated, your thoughts race. Everything connects.

Holistic care is the regular maintenance. It’s the reset helping you shift from constant stress to actual rest.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one thing. A five-minute breathing practice. A walk around the block. Noticing where tension lives in your shoulders. Small steps lead to meaningful change.

Your inner critic developed when you were young as a way to survive emotionally. Maybe you learned that criticizing yourself first meant avoiding criticism from others. Maybe perfection felt like the only path to safety.

When you lash out at it or try to force it into silence, you’re using the same harsh language it uses on you. Your brain hears the negativity and doubles down. The critic gets louder instead of quieter.

What actually creates change is approaching the critical part of yourself the way you might approach a frightened child. You bring patience instead of force. You ask questions instead of issuing commands.

What are you afraid will happen if I stop being so hard on myself? What are you trying to keep me safe from?

This kind of internal dialogue takes practice and feels awkward at first. Over time, though, something loosens, and the grip weakens.

Reiki is offered at Healing Arts Center as part of our collaborative approach to whole-person care. It is a complementary practice that supports physical, emotional, and mental well-being without interfering with any existing medical or therapeutic care. Whether you are navigating anxiety, processing something that has settled deep in the body, or looking for a way back to stillness, Reiki works alongside whatever else you have going on.

During a session, you lie fully clothed on a table while your practitioner works lightly on or just above areas of the body. People often notice warmth, a sense of heaviness lifting, or a depth of relaxation they have not felt in a while. Some people feel very little during the session and notice the shift in the days that follow.

Sliding scale available for active duty, veterans, first responders, and family members. All are welcome here.
