When anxiety shows up, it’s tempting to avoid whatever triggered it, hoping the feelings will go away. Stepping back only gives anxiety more strength, though. The more we run from uncomfortable situations, the bigger anxiety becomes in our lives. It starts to feel like this overwhelming force we can’t possibly face. Avoidance is what keeps us stuck. We end up missing out on things we care about while anxiety continues to grow.
The shift happens when we stop running and start experiencing the discomfort instead. This doesn’t mean diving into your biggest fears right away. You can start small, with whatever feels manageable today. Maybe it’s five minutes of something that makes you nervous. As you practice facing anxiety rather than avoiding it, you’ll notice the feelings don’t last as long as you thought they would. You’ll discover something even more important: you’re capable of handling much more than anxiety wants you to believe.
