Today is the big day as we prepare to move to our brand-new hospital.

We see this more often than people realize:

Exotic pet “emergencies” that didn’t start as emergencies at all.

They usually begin with small husbandry issues that build up quietly over time.

For example 👇
• A rabbit with mild nasal discharge that turns into a full respiratory infection because of dusty bedding or poor airflow.
• A reptile with subtle weakness caused by improper UVB or temperature gradients long before bones visibly change.
• A bird who starts over-preening due to lighting or enrichment deficits.
• Fish or axolotls stressed by water quality shifts that slowly impact their gills and immune system.

By the time clinical signs are obvious, the body has often been compensating for weeks — sometimes months.

The good news?
Many of these cases are preventable with proper setup, lighting, temperature control, hydration, enrichment, and routine wellness exams.

If you have an exotic pet and you’re unsure about your enclosure or care plan, we’re happy to help you review it! Prevention is always easier (and kinder) than treatment.

🦎 Most reptile emergencies aren’t random, they’re the result of slow, silent stress, building over time.

Without proper UVB, reptiles can’t make vitamin D₃.
Without vitamin D₃, they can’t absorb calcium, and without calcium, bones weaken and organs struggle.

If enclosure temperatures aren’t proper for the species, digestion slows.
If hydration or humidity isn’t right, kidneys suffer.
If diets aren’t species-appropriate, deficiencies develop.

By the time you see lethargy, swelling, fractures, or loss of appetite…the disease process is often pretty advanced.

Reptiles don’t crash overnight. Their bodies compensate - until they can’t.

Our scaly friends deserve to live their best life too! Make sure you’re researching proper care, bringing them in for annual exams, and always feel free to give us a call if you have questions 💙
