W***y, Tom, and Artesia all suffered strokes and were cared for on our inpatient rehabilitation unit.

They shared with WAVY TV 10 how they now volunteer on the unit alongside the team who nursed them back to health.

💙❤️🧡💛

It is ‘Healthcare Volunteer Week,’ and Sentara is celebrating its volunteers.

Former patients at Virginia Beach General Hospital now volunteer with the same unit that nursed them back to health. The volunteers with inpatient rehab say they want to help out in any way they can to repay the nurses and doctors.

We are honored to celebrate the dedication of Bridges, a stunning glass sculpture now installed at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, generously gifted by the LifeNet Health Foundation 💙

Created by artist Staci Katsias, Bridges is a powerful tribute to the life‑changing impact of organ and tissue donation. The sculpture unfolds in three meaningful sections: descending panels representing the donor’s life, a central circular form symbolizing transformation, and ascending panels that embody renewed life and healing for the recipient. Together, they tell a deeply human story of connection, hope, and continuity.

The materials themselves hold special meaning. Crafted entirely from reclaimed glass once used as shelves and remnants from the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio in Norfolk, Bridges reflects the beauty of renewal and repurposing, mirroring the very essence of donation. ✨

We are deeply grateful for this meaningful gift and the opportunity it creates to honor donors, recipients, and the enduring power of generosity. 🫶

💙 This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating Dr. Kimberly Span.

For the past two years, she has served as the first woman to oversee SVBGH’s medical staff since the hospital opened in 1965, leading more than 1,200 physicians across specialties.

Born at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital in 1981 and returning in 2017 as a hospitalist, Dr. Span’s connection to SVBGH has always run deep.

Encouraged by chief medical officers to get involved, she stepped into physician leadership, serving on committees, helping diversify representation, and opening doors for more women physicians along the way.

“My approachability is my superpower,” said Dr. Span. “I have been supported every step of the way and have never had to be something I’m not to be successful at Sentara.”

We’re grateful for her leadership, authenticity, and the culture she continues to help build, where everyone belongs.

For 55 years, Edith Greene has been part of the heartbeat of our Emergency Department. And this year, she celebrated a milestone birthday the same way she always has… by coming to work. 🎉

Edith turned 90 and spent the day surrounded by the team she's supported for decades. Colleagues gathered to celebrate her incredible career, including members of the original Emergency Department crew from when our hospital first opened in 1965.

After more than half a century in the ED, Edith says she loves her job and the people she works with. Judging by the celebration, it’s clear the feeling is mutual. 💙

Dr. Deepak Talreja knows a thing or two about Hands-Only CPR.

Not just because he’s the clinical chief of cardiology at Sentara… but because last year, when someone went into cardiac arrest and crashed their car outside his office, he stepped in to perform CPR.

Here’s the truth: most cardiac arrests happen outside of a hospital. Which means the first responder could be you.

Hands-Only CPR is simple:
1️⃣ Call 911
2️⃣ Push hard and fast in the center of the chest

Watch this video to see exactly how to perform Hands-Only CPR so you feel confident stepping in if the moment ever comes. You never know when you could be the one who helps save a life. ❤️🫀

Our teams are wearing red today to shine a light on heart health and the steps we can all take to reduce our risk. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and continues to impact families in every community.

Awareness starts with simple habits like knowing your blood pressure and understanding what puts you at risk. These everyday actions play a major role in preventing serious heart issues.

Together, we can build a stronger future by putting heart health first. ❤️

All Sentara emergency departments are currently seeing a spike in visits for flu and respiratory illnesses.

If you're feeling sick with mild to moderate symptoms, you may not need the emergency department — and there are other options that can help you feel better sooner.

Our School Liaison Program links Virginia schools with Sentara, helping students, families, and staff access the resources they need to improve their health and well-being. From vaccine clinics and mobile care visits to behavioral health tools and case management, these liaisons make support easy and accessible. 💛

Recently, our team partnered with Communities In Schools of Virginia for a "Seats and Feets" drive. Together, we collected toiletries, socks, and undergarments to help students in need feel cared for and ready to learn. 🧦🪥✨

💚 From a spider bite to a life-saving diagnosis, Bobby’s journey is nothing short of miraculous. After 43 days on our oncology unit fighting leukemia, he returned with his family to spread holiday cheer—bringing cookies for every patient and a custom-carved 3-ft wooden Christmas tree for our 25 Days of Christmas tradition.

Bobby said, “I get emotional when I talk about the nurses. I love them beyond reproach right now. When I was in the bed, they got down to eye-level with me and held my hand. They didn’t have to do that. They’re angels.”

This season, we celebrate the power of care, community, and giving back.

One of our most meaningful holiday traditions belongs to Anthony White.❤️💚

For 38 years, Anthony has worked behind the scenes at our hospital as a maintenance mechanic, and every holiday season, he spends his personal time painting murals to bring joy to patients, families, and staff. Last week, he unveiled his 2025 murals: eight Charlie Brown scenes and a 3D Snoopy doghouse!

“When you work in a hospital, you see sick people and stressed employees, but I do my best to change their mood,” Anthony said at the unveiling. And he does that for so many of us, year after year! 🎄

Thank you for filling our hallways with color, nostalgia, and heart. 🎨✨
