Ovarian Cysts: When to Watch and When to Worry

Hearing you have an ovarian cyst can feel unsettling—but most are harmless and go away on their own. Understanding what ovarian cysts are and when they need medical attention can help you stay calm and informed.

Common types of cysts include:
🩺 Functional cysts: Form during ovulation, often disappear naturally.
🩺 Dermoid cysts: Contain tissue like hair or skin, usually benign.
🩺 Endometriomas: Linked to endometriosis, can cause pain and affect fertility.
🩺 Cystadenomas: Fluid-filled and may need removal if large.

Symptoms to watch for:
✔ Pelvic pain or pressure
✔ Bloating or abdominal swelling
✔ Irregular periods
✔ Pain during s*x
✔ Frequent urination

Seek medical help right away if you have sudden severe pain, fever, or vomiting.

At Tidewater Physicians for Women in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA, our OB/GYNs specialize in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating ovarian cysts with compassionate, individualized care.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A powerful reminder that early detection saves lives. At Tidewater Physicians for Women in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA, we encourage every woman to prioritize regular screenings and self-awareness year-round.

Why It Matters:
When breast cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is about 99%. Mammograms can detect tumors too small to feel—allowing for less invasive treatments and better outcomes.

Early Detection Steps:
• Schedule annual mammograms starting at age 40–45 (earlier if you’re high-risk).
• Perform monthly breast self-exams—look and feel for any changes.
• Maintain a healthy lifestyle: exercise, eat a balanced diet, and limit alcohol.

Modern 3D mammograms provide clearer images and more accurate results, especially for women with dense breast tissue.

This month—and every month—take charge of your breast health. Your vigilance could save your life. 💖
