You wake up stiff. Your neck is tight after a long day at the computer. Your lower back aches after a weekend of yard work. The tempting response? Take an ibuprofen, stretch a little, and hope it goes away.
As a chiropractor who has worked with thousands of patients here in Virginia Beach, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when people “push through” pain that their body is clearly signaling needs attention. Minor, correctable issues become chronic problems. Mobility decreases. Quality of life suffers.
Chiropractic care isn’t just for those who have been in a car accident or thrown out their back. It’s for anyone whose body is telling them something is off — if you know how to listen.
Here are five signs it’s time to stop waiting and book an appointment.
Sign #1: Your Pain Has Lasted More Than a Few Days
Acute muscle soreness from exercise or a one-time strain often resolves within 48–72 hours. But if your pain persists beyond three to five days — or keeps coming back in the same spot — that’s your body signaling a deeper issue. Recurring pain in the neck, mid-back, lower back, or hips is one of the most common reasons patients come to see us at Alpine Chiropractic.
Spinal misalignments, or subluxations, can cause persistent tension and inflammation that no amount of rest will fully resolve. A chiropractic adjustment addresses the root cause rather than masking the symptom.
Sign #2: You Have Sharp, Shooting, or Radiating Pain
Pain that shoots down your leg, radiates from your neck into your shoulder, or causes tingling and numbness in your arms or hands is often a sign of nerve irritation. This is a hallmark symptom of conditions like sciatica or cervical radiculopathy.
We see a significant number of patients with these symptoms here in Virginia Beach, particularly active individuals who surf, run, or work physical jobs, as well as remote workers spending long hours at desks. Through spinal adjustments and targeted care plans, chiropractic treatment can reduce nerve compression and restore function without the need for medication or surgery.
Sign #3: You’ve Been in an Accident — Even a Minor One
Whether it was a fender-bender on Independence Boulevard or a beach volleyball collision, trauma to the body — even seemingly minor trauma — can cause spinal misalignment and soft tissue damage that doesn’t become painful until days or even weeks later.
One of the most important things I tell my patients is: don’t wait until the pain becomes severe. Getting evaluated promptly after an accident allows us to identify and treat issues early, preventing them from becoming chronic conditions that are far more difficult to resolve.
Sign #4: Your Headaches Are Frequent or Getting Worse
Not all headaches originate in the head. Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches (those that start in the neck) are among the most common types, and both can be directly related to spinal misalignment, poor posture, and muscle tension in the cervical spine.
If you find yourself reaching for pain relievers more than twice a week for headaches, chiropractic care may offer a more lasting solution. Adjustments to the upper cervical spine can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches by addressing the underlying structural causes, not just the pain signal.
Sign #5: Your Posture or Range of Motion Has Changed
If you’ve noticed that you can’t turn your head as far as you used to, that one shoulder sits higher than the other, or that you walk or sit differently to avoid discomfort, these are signs that your musculoskeletal system is compensating for something.
Compensation patterns, if left uncorrected, lead to uneven wear on joints, accelerated degeneration, and increased injury risk over time. Chiropractic care helps restore proper alignment, balance, and range of motion — often producing noticeable results within just a few visits.
You Don’t Have to Keep Living With Pain
Pain is not a character flaw. It’s a signal. And you deserve to have that signal properly evaluated by a professional who can help you understand what’s causing it and how to correct it.
