🖤 Black History Month Spotlight: George Edmund Haynes

George Edmund Haynes is widely recognized as the first Black professional social worker in the United States. He was a sociologist, educator, and co-founder of the National Urban League, where he helped shape policies focused on employment, housing, and social conditions for Black Americans during the Great Migration.

Haynes believed social work should address not just individual struggles, but the systems and structures creating them. Long before “macro practice” became common language, he was already doing the work—using research, advocacy, and policy to push for equity and opportunity.

His legacy reminds us that social work has always been about justice, dignity, and systemic change.

✨ This is our history. This is our profession.
