Today we’re highlighting a procedure called percutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect (ASD)—a minimally invasive technique performed through a vein, allowing patients to avoid open‑heart surgery and enjoy a faster recovery.

What is an Atrial Septal Defect?
An ASD is a hole in the wall between the heart’s two upper chambers. This opening allows extra blood to flow where it shouldn’t, causing the heart and lungs to work harder. Closing the defect can prevent long‑term complications and improve heart function.

Ankur Gupta, MD, FACC is a skilled and highly experienced board-certified interventional cardiologist, whose priority is to provide timely and exceptional care to his patients.

He specializes in procedures such as cardiac catheterization, coronary intervention, transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR), Left Atrial Appendage occlusion (Watchman ™) and PFO/ASD closure to treat the full range of cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and valvular heart disease, to name a few.

Dr. Gupta established the first structural heart program in Tulare County by starting the Transcatheter heart valve program in 2018. He was the first interventional cardiologist to perform minimally invasive heart valve replacement in Tulare and Kings County and has a proven record of excellent results.

He holds board certifications in Nuclear cardiology, Adult echocardiography, General cardiology, and Interventional cardiology and Vascular interpretation.
