That’s why relationships are at the basis of everything we do. The courage to seek support during a difficult time should be met with respect and compassion. Our focus is making YOU comfortable so you can move through whatever current struggle you’re facing. We strive for the highest quality in our approach as we help individuals and families go beyond merely surviving and move toward THRIVING! Child and Adolescent Counseling Services
Mental health is a key component in a child’s healthy development. Children need to be emotionally and psychologically healthy in order to learn, grow, and lead productive lives. The Thrive model takes into account a very important reality: Children don’t know what therapy IS because therapy is a very adult concept. Kids need therapy for KIDS! Children’s brain development, verbal skills, impulse control, coping skills and reasoning abilities are immature and not the same as those of adults. Some see these as limitations . . . when in fact, using the competencies of childhood: fantasy, imagination, playfulness, curiosity and openness to learning are the best ways to help kids succeed. By expressing themselves symbolically through toys in play therapy, children are able to distance themselves from difficult feelings and memories, which are frequently too hard for them to talk about directly with others. This gives children the opportunity to communicate their fears, worries, problems, wishes, and desires to others, even if it is done symbolically through toys. Other adults in children’s lives, such as play therapists and parents, can then get a better understanding of children’s inner worlds, which allows these adults to understand what children need in order to provide the appropriate type of help and support. Family Therapy
Our family affects who we are and who we become, both for the better and for worse. We learn our vocabulary, our habits, our customs and rituals, and how to view and observe the world around us. Anyone seeking healthier, closer family relationships can benefit from family therapy. Family therapy is necessary to address family issues and heal a family’s wounds. If any of the above scenarios resonates with your family, consider seeking family therapy. Family therapy can be beneficial on many different levels. Couples Therapy
All things can be improved, changed and bettered, with just a little support, no matter how big or small. With couples therapy, you’ll learn how to communicate your feelings and needs, and get what you want out of your relationship. In couples therapy sessions, we help you develop the necessary skills needed to maintain sustaining love.

Today, in honor of Black History Month, we celebrate child development psychologist Dr. Mamie Phipps Clark, whose innovative research helped the nation understand how identity and environment shape children’s development. In addition to Mamie’s research, she also co-founded the Northside Center for Child Development () with her husband, Dr. Kenneth B. Clark, to provide vital mental health and educational support to children and families. Dr. Clark’s work reminds us that children thrive when their identities, communities, and experiences are affirmed and supported.

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day — a beautiful reminder that even the smallest gestures can make the biggest impact. A smile, a thoughtful text, holding the door, offering grace instead of judgment… these simple acts ripple far beyond what we may ever see.

Especially in times when the world can feel heavy, divided, or overwhelming, kindness becomes more than a nicety — it becomes necessary. It grounds us. It connects us. It reminds us of our shared humanity.

Let today be a gentle nudge: lead with compassion, extend patience, and choose kindness on purpose. You never know whose day — or life — you may quietly brighten.

Honoring those who have contributed so richly to the mental health profession…

This Black History Month, and every month MHANJ joins organizations and individuals nationwide in honoring Black history and recognizing its lasting impact on mental health and well-being.
We begin this week by sharing an article that offers an overview of several historic Black pioneers whose work helped shape the mental health field. In the weeks ahead, we will highlight the contributions of many of these leaders individually, exploring how their vision, research, and advocacy continue to influence the mental health movement today.
Follow us here as we recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of Black and African American leaders to mental health and wellness.

Today is a beautiful reminder of the kind of leadership our communities truly need — leadership rooted in fairness, justice, integrity, and kindness.

Strong leaders don’t just hold titles; they hold responsibility. They listen before they speak. They seek understanding before making decisions. They create space for others to feel seen, heard, and valued.

Fair leaders ensure equity.
Just leaders stand firm in their values.
Kind leaders lead with empathy and compassion.

Whether in schools, workplaces, families, or communities, leadership grounded in character makes all the difference. It builds trust. It fosters growth. It inspires others to lead with heart.

May we not only look for these qualities in those who guide us — but strive to embody them ourselves each day.
💜💙💚🧡

Our Story

Where Kids Thrive, Inc’s purpose is to address the lack of mental health resources, particularly for children, adolescents, and their families. Mental health is a key component in a child’s healthy development. Children need to be emotionally and psychologically healthy in order to learn, grow, and lead productive lives. Youth involved in child welfare or the juvenile justice system are exposed to a higher risk of having experienced traumatic events. Children who are exposed to traumatic events have a higher probability of developing mental health conditions.
