“The skill of being with women in pain in labour often rests in believing in women when they do not believe in themselves.”
– Nicky Leaf

This is one of the most significant skills anyone supporting a Mother in labor can hold. The very "skill" of riding the waves with a laboring woman while leaving her undisturbed is the best way to help her through. A well versed doula or midwife can simply observe a laboring woman, the way she moves her body, the sounds she makes, and fully understand her progress in labor without ever touching her or speaking to her.

News flash…. 🗣️🗣️🗣️Fetuses don’t breathe through their necks. Another reason why leaving the cord intact is important! The maternal/fetal blood circulation is still in progress so why interrupt it?!

Nope 👇

Some facts about nuchal cords:

🔆 Nuchal cords are incredibly common, occurring in an estimated 1 of 3 births.

🔆 They are very rarely dangerous.

🔆 Fetuses receive oxygen through the umbilical cord, not by breathing through the mouth or nose, so a cord around the neck is not cutting off their air like it would for you or me. If the cord is left in tact, the baby can still be receiving oxygen from the placenta for several minutes after birth.

🔆 Most babies with a nuchal cord have one that is very loose and it can be simply slipped over the head after birth. There is usually no indication of the nuchal cord at all.

🔆 The main way for a nuchal cord to be harmful (if the cord is healthy) is if it is wrapped multiple times and is so tight that it compresses itself, thereby decreasing blood flow inside, or if there is a true knot so tight that it does the same (rare). The cord would have to be extremely tight to cut off blood flow between the body and brain.

🔆 Nuchal cord is very difficult to identify before birth, even with ultrasound.

🔆 You do not need to have a c-section solely due to a suspected nuchal cord.

🔆 Medications given during a birth induction/augmentation can cause erratic & extra strong contractions, causing heart decelerations in the fetus. If a c-section is performed and a nuchal cord is discovered, it is frequently blamed (though the cause was more likely the induction meds). This can lead the mother to feel her baby was "saved" by the hospital staff, when they may have actually been the ones to CAUSE the issues the baby was "saved" from.

🔆 A healthy umbilical cord is filled with a gelatinous substance called Wharton's Jelly that protects the cord vessels as a fetus twists and turns its way inside the uterus.

Some mothers quietly breeeeaaaathe their babies out🧘🏽‍♀️
And others ROOAAARRRR them out! 🐅

And guess what? Neither is better, more natural, or more praiseworthy.

You are feeling the unparalleled POWER of a baby moving through your very being. You're allowed to say something about it! You're allowed to completely internalize it.

If you quietly work and find your energy best turned inward? Amazing. (*As long as you're doing it because YOU want to do that and not because of fear or others being threatened by your noise. It’s a good litmus test for who you decide to invite to your birth. Who can you completely and safely let go with?*)

If you are loud and that energy is rumbling over and pouring out of you? Amazing. That is all that beautiful, powerful, intense, wild, divinely-ordained energy of LIFE in you coming out! Those labor moans, growls, and roars can glorify God, the Designer of it all. Shame on those who embarrass, shush, scold, or mock a woman who is experiencing the miraculous, beautiful, INTENSITY of birth!

Interestingly, the mothers who feel they *have* to be quiet can experience a trauma in its own right, even if on the outside they look serene and quiet. The mothers who are loud and may appear to be wild or even struggling may walk away from their birth feeling amazing and empowered because they discovered a new and untapped strength inside.

It is usually recommended to try to focus any vocalizing into deeper, lower noises. Going deeper and more open keeps the rest of the body less tense and more open. It helps embrace and work with the sensations. Higher pitched screams or "heady" noises can be a sign of or contribute to anxiety and both mental and physical tension which might not be helpful. But those noises aren't "bad" or "wrong" either! It's birth! It can be hard!

So mama?
You’re allowed to
roar
growl
yell
grunt
moan
sing
shout
laugh
bellow
howl
horse lip
or yes, quietly breathe
your baby out.

Do what *you* need to do.

But feel free to let the world know of the mighty glorious thing happening within you and fill the room with your song.
