Lately I’ve been seeing more and more people doing DIY skin treatments at home.
Microneedling devices bought online.
Strong chemical peels ordered from random sellers.
People layering five to seven active ingredients in one routine.
I understand why people try it.
Everyone wants clear skin fast.
But here is what people don’t see behind the scenes.
In the clinic, I’m already seeing the damage these trends are causing.
Clients are coming in with:
Over-exfoliated skin barriers
Chemical burns from DIY peels
Hyperpigmentation from improper treatments
Scarring caused by at-home microneedling
Most people think they are saving money doing these treatments themselves.
But the reality is that many of them end up with skin damage that costs much more to fix later.
Barrier repair treatments
Pigmentation correction
Multiple sessions to reverse inflammation and scarring
What started as a “cheap skincare hack” often turns into months of repair treatments.
The part that concerns me the most is that many of these trends are being promoted by people with no medical training.
They show the results.
But they rarely show the complications that happen afterward.
As a nurse and medspa owner, my goal is simple.
Protect your skin before damage happens, not after.
Because once the skin barrier is damaged, fixing it takes time, patience, and multiple treatments.
I’m curious.
Have you ever tried a viral skincare trend that actually made your skin worse?
