When Tom collapsed in his home in the Fall of 2022, he quickly lost all control of his legs. Within hours, he was paralyzed. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome—a rare and terrifying neurological disorder that left him with no voluntary control of his muscles.

Tom’s determination, paired with the expertise of his Ascension Providence therapy team, helped him go from a wheelchair to walking again. Today, he’s back in the workshop doing what he loves.

But thanks to the dedicated therapists and caregivers at Ascension Providence, Tom began to rebuild his strength—one small milestone at a time. Through specialized physical and occupational therapy, his care team helped him regain mobility, confidence, and independence.

“Without the quality, equipment, and staff at Providence, I literally would not have recovered to this degree,” Tom shared.

The Ascension Texas Disaster Recovery and Medical Response Unit jumps into action when disasters strike.

Thanks to our supporters, the Ascension Texas Foundations funded supplies and other needs for this team to respond to the Central Texas Floods this summer. They took hygiene kits, weather radios and other necessities to those who had lost homes and property to the floodwaters. The unit also contributed clinical support for first responders and volunteers as well as psychological first-aid to those traumatized by the devastation.

On this Veterans Day, we are incredibly proud to highlight the extraordinary dedication of Ascension Providence's very own Sgt. Maj. Octaviano Gallegos, a retired Marine who bravely served his country and continues to serve others in the hospital today.

In 2019, Sgt. Maj. Gallegos initiated this heartfelt program “The Final Salute” to honor every veteran who passes away as a patient. His commitment ensures that each veteran receives a proper military send-off, a final salute that acknowledges their service and sacrifice.

Sgt. Maj. Gallegos personally meets with veterans and their families, building emotional connections and gathering stories that he shares during the final es**rt. Regardless of the hour, he is there to lead them through the hospital lobby, where taps are played, and their contributions are honored.

The impact of "The Final Salute" extends beyond the hospital halls. Sgt. Maj. Gallegos has created a Veterans Memorial, "Sacred Ground," outside the hospital, where bricks engraved with the names of honored veterans serve as a permanent tribute.

Thank you to all who have bravely served our country!
