There has been a lot of hype surrounding 'stem cell' injections which unfortunately has sometimes included misinformation which has created some confusion.

Arnold Caplan, PhD coined the phrase 'stem cell' in the late 1980s but then spent the last few years of his life (before passing in January 2024) advocating that the term Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) be changed to Medicinal Signaling Cells (MSCs) as this more accurately describes how he later discovered these cells function and to remove the perception that after injecting these cells, they would turn into healthy cells In the region injected and cure the condition.

The phrase 'stem cell injection' has been used to refer to birth product tissue as well as procedures where tissue is harvest from a patient and then injected into the patient's area of pain.

Birth product tissue injections are prohibited as the FDA considers these drugs and is requiring research studies to prove safety and efficacy before they will be legally allowed for use in the US. It is worth noting that amniotic tissue injections do not contain any cells, thus can not contain any 'stem cells', despite what has been marketed. There has also been a recent study that demonstrated that birth product tissue injections demonstrated no better outcomes than other regenerative procedures that are allowed (like PRP).

Procedures where bone marrow (BMAC) or fat (MFAT) are harvested from a patient, minimally manipulated within FDA cleared guidelines, and injected back into the SAME patient do contain MSCs which have been shown to be strong signaling cells- which can help arthritis, tendonitis and ligament injuries.
